AI is mentioned on every other advert now. Important to remember it isn't just SEO that's bombarded by it at the moment.

Jamie Carragher's response to the Semenyo racist abuse was terrible. That, along with his AFCON comments, means it's irresponsible of Sky to have him on the air at this point.

Unreal. A term like this has very broad intent but, still, wow.
To no one's surprise, now Google and Reddit are competing for the #1 position for the keyword "travel"

This probably won't happen, but US digital policies are so strange. TikTok generates $$$ and supports livelihoods.
US lawmakers have told Apple and Google to be ready to remove TikTok on January 19

They're facing hundreds of billions of dollars in fines if they don't comply

It'a depressing to think that parasite SEO isn't actually the problem anymore. Google's algorithm has monopolised search by relying on brand.
Brand is an easy signal for Google to reward

At every turn over the past 15 years they've refined and relied heavier on brand until it broke

Rewarding authentic experiences and creation? That's a bigger challenge I hope they crack it as small publishers go broke

This infographic really emphasises the fact that Google does not like irrelevant content. Even if you're not working in affiliates, don't just go where the volume is.

Great thread here. Checking product filters for search demand is so key to deciding what needs to be indexable.
🛒 🛍️ eCommerce SEO Tip (since I'm seeing a lot of good questions on this across Slack communities this week!):

Facet & Filter URL variations (e.g. those URLs with ? and & in them - like "?color=red&size=m") are just regular 'ol URLs.

"Would a user like reading this?" is virtually a ranking signal now. Quality more important than ever, even if some SERPs don't suggest that.
Alex Moss (@alexmoss.bsky.social) explains that the existence of Navboost highlights the need to maintain site content and prevent stagnation, as it may impact rankings, which means you need to be proactive with your SEO maintenance to avoid future harm.

Their lack of response is a firm reminder that Google is sadly about capitalism, not great content.

Do you know how many visitors were brought to your website as a result of an AI search or chat? It's already in GA4, but usually hidden. Let's fix that. 👇

The SEO chapter of Web Almanac 2024 from @httparchive.org is officially out.

The 2024 edition of the SEO chapter is the longest and most in-depth ever written. It analyzed 17 million pages in just over 83TB of data.

You really can't rely on Google to follow canonicals on syndicated content, but you'd think they'd be capable of indentifying SRA sites!
Now that so many publishers are being penalized for Site Reputation Abuse, it's even more wild to me that:

- Yahoo is getting even stronger after the core update/SRA penalties
- Some SRA penalized articles still rank well on syndicated partner websites 🤦‍♀️

A world where Google isn't the dominant force is hard to believe, but it'd make our jobs as SE0s so much more interesting.
More: "For 10 years, the DOJ wants Google to syndicate its search results, ranking signals, and query data to competitors at a marginal cost. That kind of information could let competing search engines like Microsoft’s Bing or DuckDuckGo very quickly improve their products..."

I gave up on finding the perfect rank tracker a long time ago for these exact reasons. Rank trackers can only provide estimates.
"These rank tracker results aren't accurate!"

If you're trying to spot-check rankings manually, you should know that it's impossible.

Rankings vary by so many factors: browser, device, IP, personalization, time of day. You should expect to see different results from the rank tracker every time.
