Pigeon appreciator. Lapsed scientist turned Sheffield medical student. Sometimes they let me teach anatomy (they probably shouldn't)

This is a wicked poster, are pigeons not entitled to receive a higher education as well?

AI-slop boostering is also normalizing diminishing humanity:

"If everything that makes us irreducible to algorithms, everything that is too complex to turn into numbers on spreadsheets, is dismissed and ignored—humanity will be over."

We’re Already at Risk of Ceding Our Humanity to AI
Machines It’s 2019. I’m in a bar in Providence, Rhode Island, chatting with graduate students and researchers with PhDs. One of them, who holds a PhD in Latin American literature, observed approvin…

Here is an earlier photograph of the Bruce's Fruit Dove from April, when it ventured out into the aviary with it’s mum for the first time. She looked very proud 👏😊

Next up for #HistoricalHearts on #ValentinesDay

A 440-pound heart from a blue whale, the largest-known animal to ever exist. It was so big, it had to be doused in 1,000+ gallons of formaldehyde before being plastinated by a team at Royal Ontario Museum. More: www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/pains...

When you think of gladiators, your mind probably jumps to the Colosseum of Rome, not the damp and misty landscapes of Britain. But the Romans brought these spectacles to the province, and evidence suggests that gladiatorial combat was a popular form of entertainment even on this distant frontier.
For #FindsFriday a lamp depicting a 'fallen' #galdiator found as part of a #Roman burial assemblage from #Colchester. Currently on loan to @dorsetmuseum.bsky.social. Been having lots of interesting chats this morning with @belovedofoizys.bsky.social about these for an exciting upcoming project!

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts.

The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails.

The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

A corrosion cast of human heart and lungs, made by David Tompsett at the Hunterian Museum, London, in the 1960s. These casts are made by injecting vessels with a molten material which sets, before dissolving soft tissue with an acid. This is a plastic resin, but historically it was done with waxes

Fascinating bit of anatomy, and on a pigeon - basically the ideal for me
Super short vid of Rotisserie being held like an ice cream cone and his little no-keel belly. We got some images (waiting on them to email to me) and they are SO cool! He has NO KEEL at all, not even a bit, both sides of his rib cage are completely detached from one another!
