In the last chapter of Alice’s memoir, “Year of the Tiger,” she wrote her own future obituary.

The wonderful “oracle, storyteller, cyborg, trouble-maker, activist, night owl” we loved so much closed it with:

“Enjoy all of Alice’s good shit, and may you create some good shit as well.”

As @raeoflion.bsky.social and I wrote in this article featuring Rae's video:

A report from the California Health Care Foundation found that 10 percent cut to HCBS programs would lead to $1 billion more in Medicaid spending in the state... due to the greater overall costs of institutionalization.
Medicaid-funded services are their lifeline—and make their work possible. But the Trump cuts to the program could change it all.

Meet Audrey and Jeremy, who went viral for talking about how the GOP's Medicaid cuts could devastate their everyday.

And when both Christian nationalism and ableism emphasize individualized explanations for social problems pertaining to disability, the result is opposition to collective action to address the inequalities faced by Americans with disabilities.

20th century iterations of Christian nationalism embraced these economic ideals and made them vital cultural markers of being "true" Christians and Americans.

A significant component of modern iterations of ableism is a capitalist market logic and neoliberal value system defining the economic productivity of individuals as a moral and social good, and foundational to the social and moral “health” of societies.

NEW RESEARCH

Americans who embrace Christian nationalism more likely to agree situation f/ people with disabilities is good as it is, disabled people demand too much from rest of society, & there have been enough societal efforts in favor of people w/ disabilities.

Great article.

I'm very grateful for the work of Alex Green on unearthing a lot of this history. His book _A Perfect Turmoil_ was among the best I read all year, I recommend it.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities rely on SNAP. In my latest @19thnews.org, I talk to a bunch of policy people and economists, as well as Kajeana Tillman, who lives in the Bronx and just wants to get groceries like she usually does.
SNAP benefits are a ‘lifeline’ — especially for people with disabilities
For those with disabilities who rely on the aid, its uncertainty threatens not just nutrition, but independence.

Friend sent me this from The Economist’s newsletter. The ‘related’ article makes it even better.

I truly wonder what politicians would do if they had to try life on a middle income salary for even a month. Do they understand how much energy goes into finding groceries that your paycheck will cover and will keep everyone in your family full? Grocery prices aren't abstract economic theory to us.
Q: Food prices are still going up. Grocery prices are still going up. How do you respond?

MIKE JOHNSON: All of the economist have shown that food prices always go up. There's an inflationary level that's built in to grocery prices.

Faith leaders — as well as faith-based food banks — have long argued they absolutely cannot independently handle the raw number of people currently served by government food assistance programs.

They argued it again last week in Congress, calling the idea a "lie". religionnews.com/2025/10/30/f...

I work in family support research. We intentionally use the terms "family caregiver" or "kinship caregiver" even when the cg is a parent. It's expansive. Providing care isn't contained in nuclear biological families. In fact, outcomes are often worse w/o extended networks referred to as "family."
My momma bestie is my auntie
My auntie friend that go to her church is also my auntie
My 75 year old cousin... is also my auntie

"Auntie" is what happens when you understand the expansive proposition of family

"That's not your aunt" is what happens when you live outside of restorative community
