This confirmation is the one I have feared the most. Innocent citizens who happen to have opposing politics will be surveilled as though they are our real enemies and oppressed to a degree that hasn't been seen in the US in decades, maybe ever. We are becoming the evil we once deplored.

Some of us olds are getting pre-Iraq war flashbacks. Respectable Beltway types would not listen to or acknowledge the filthy hordes warning them, then afterwards pretended nobody saw it coming. AND that they were still somehow “right” for believing it would go better? Shameless then, shameless now.
"No one ever thought this would happen" is dishonest and journalists not pointing that out are doing you all a disservice. Many people said word for word this would happen. You just didn't respect those people. And you need to be honest instead of the feigned surprise for sympathy.
