“The anti-Semitism crisis could have been seen, & sometimes was used, for politically advantageous reasons…”

Journalist Paul Holden gives the lowdown on how the Labour Party's anti-semitism crisis came to be & the way it was used to compromise the movement's leadership.

True. Was reading a not particularly left-wing account of the intervention in Russia post 1917, and struck by how virulently antisemitic the British officers - and Churchill - were in their correspondence.
We need to get past the idea of these people being "radicalised" on X. The British ruling class has been racist for centuries. For a while that was suppressed by hard won anti-racist social norms. But after years of chipping away with e.g. talk of "legitimate concerns" those norms are now collapsing
A mainstream “journalist” calling for a British MP to be deported. Is it because I’m Muslim? Next time, just say it with your chest.

This is *so* funny. I also enjoyed the reminder of how enjoyable it is to reduce your kids to helpless laughter.
This week, I offer a SNEAK PEEK at my son's new novel, and remember a tale from my own time as a precocious child scribe.

On time travel, stone age tools, and Idelandic fish festivals.

My son’s stories remind me of my own early literary works
His creative writing leads me to retell the time I invented an entire fish festival

It’s called ‘hybrid teaching’
In honour of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand.

I went to NUS conference (students not seamen) in the 80s and this bloke who was maybe the 356th person to try and suspend standing orders so he could wang on about himself, got massively voted down, leading to the immortal words ‘Fuck Off Conference!” as he flicked the Vs in all directions.
Can't articulate why, but I find something deeply insipid about the practice of addressing conference-goers as "Conference".

"Conference, is it just me or-"

"And that's why, Conference, I promise-"

Dehumanised nothingspeak. Grandiose, vague, bland all at once. Bleak and sad in some weird way.

I have always loved those staircases at the end of modernist uni (and presumably other) buildings ❤️
NEWS: New York, Brasilia, Manchester?

We're delighted to announce that the Renold Building at the former University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) has just been designated at Grade II, 20 years after C20's first listing application.

This is spot on. Also she is saying stuff about ‘her ends’ which is cringe
This is a dumb take for two reasons: a) it takes developers’ complaints at face value rather than challenging them to provide housing *and* amenities and b) it’s not at all clear that the people who would actually be living in these homes would settle for this compromise

Yes. I read something about 996 - working from 9 till 9 Monday to Saturday - being proposed by some tech bro. They are obsessive joyless workaholics with no friends or hinterland to distract from getting rich, so their employees need to be, too.
What keeps getting to me isn't just that these evil fuckers are reshaping the world to their every shitty desire, it's just how petty and meanspirited those desires are. They have basically infinite power and they're using it to be a cunt to people who just want to live their lives.

After the media damage is inflicted and seen by millions of eyes, you receive a private email to say there's no evidence and no action, seen by two people only

There's no public apology. They don't send this to media or post it on police accounts

We will continue to fight.

We will continue to win.

Israel has murdered more starving Palestinian civilians queuing for food from its "distribution hubs" (798) than the total number of Israeli civilians (695) killed on 7th October.

On top of the 80,000 people (over 25,000 kids) it's already butchered.
