Yesterday, agents of the police state murdered a woman while trying to use his phone to add her identity to the unperson database. Today, the guy from the phone company recommended Costco as a good source for mesh networking.

“we used tools validated for assessing and reducing human anxiety (see Methods). The term is used metaphorically to describe GPT-4’s self-reported outputs on human-designed psychological scales and is not intended to anthropomorphize the model.”

NOT INTENDED.

TO ANTHROPOMORPHIZE.

THE MODEL.
Friend, when I tell you that I was full on *yelling* in bed just before going to sleep (much love to my husband who put up with the outrage) when I encountered this paper earlier this week, and the credulous mainstream reporting on it: archive.ph/WYvgo

An *actual* very hard problem in AI, is that you literally do not need any AI involved for people to be utterly convinced they're dealing with AI.

Meet Claude Shannon's machine for playing Hex, it's just a resistor mesh, no logic gates or programming involved.

Much later Einstein postulated that the universe was a 3-sphere. But Dante got the idea first:

And as I believe I've discussed before, the word "ampersand" is a corruption of the phrase "and per se and," which means, basically, "Just fucking 'and,' all right? Nothing else. And meaning 'and.'"
Related trivia: most people know/use a ligature without even realizing it. The ampersand “&” is a ligature of the lain word “et”—meaning “and”.

It became so prevalent a ligature, we just made it a character.
Following up on that last repost, the reason why "ffi" is sometimes a single character in typefaces is that it's what's called a ligature, in which characters are merged to make them look better on the page, as seen here:

Big problem with what's being called "AI" these days—it is absolutely, unambiguously better than humans at recognizing subtle and complex patterns.

And because of this, humans are incapable of foreseeing how it will do things like become a superhuman racist.
If you read the article, you'll see that the algo's ability to identify Black patients surprised the researchers. Apparently it's not something that humans know how to do. But clearly there was SOMETHING in the data that tipped the algo off.

Which is abbreviated 'MICR'.

Numbers & some special characters are printed on the check in ferro-magnetic ink.

They can then be fed into a reader that induces magnetism & reads the unique waveform for each character.

The character shapes are /magnetically distinct/, but still *human readable*.
