Shooting in Wallace, #Idaho

Shooter confirmed dead, at least two injured.

www.spokesman.com/stories/2025...
Oh boy. This is all so weird. My next door neighbor was parked in front of the sheriff's office, two girls asked him if he'd drive them home. Just then, the shooter starts shooting, hits the girls and neighbor's truck. Girls jump into neighbor's truck and he hauls ass to the ER.

Discovery is a bitch...

A smart business person wouldn't expose themselves to it like this.
President Trump’s spiteful defamation suit against the Pulitzer Prize Board may backfire, as the latter is now demanding Trump’s psychological records, prescription medication records, and tax returns in the discovery process. trib.al/LUCScTR

When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

Crazy to have my outdoor window box looking like this at the end of December.

The crazy thing is, this was pre ubiquitous wifi & cell service. The furby spy theory was that furbies would listen and steal state secrets then tell other furbies what they heard and it'd eventually telephone-game its way back to China.

All bullshit.
Late 90s people panicked thinking Furby was a spy. Most federal agencies banned them from premises and those of us with access to sensitive information about federal infrastructure were instructed not to have them at home where we might accidentally leak info to the Chinese via the talking dolls.

Part of my villain origin story thread
There were a couple articles written about me in tech/fed/fire related magazines when I was about 16 and the fact that I was doing what I was doing was more widely know. I'd already been working for a year or two before then.

For a long time in the USFS & BLM I was "that kid"

Apparently furbies are a thing again.

So I got to tell a whole new generation how dumb it was that I was forbidden from having one by the federal government when they were popular in highschool

Because I was a federal employee and Republican politicians were dumb as shit.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it. And a big warm hug to those who just try to survive it.

Sent the two managers in my dept a note to check on them (one is dealing with LA flooding) and wish them Merry Christmas.

I mentioned being at the in-laws' Christmas party and the other offered to create a production incident for me.

Ahhhh, I have the best team.

I have neighbors here in Lewiston who are still picking (green) tomatoes. I pulled my tomato plants in October but we still have blooming flowers.

I've been asked a few times here and elsewhere if I remember a winter off to this bad of a start.

A couple weeks ago, I said probably.

We are now in "no" territory.

If an editor in chief turns down multiple opportunities to review a piece, and then pulls it at the last minute after their newsroom has promoted it, she's a bad manager. That's not failing to avoid drama in her own newsroom, as Sally's piece puts it. It's awful for the entire institution.
The Bari Weiss hysteria continues. Exactly what in "this piece isn't ready" and "try harder to get comment from the administration" constitutes the death of American journalism? www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...
