Open season for China in Taiwan
This strike doesn't represent strength. It's not sound foreign policy. It puts Americans at risk in Venezuela and the region, and it sends a horrible and disturbing signal to other powerful leaders across the globe that targeting a head of state is an acceptable policy for the U.S. government.

If Xi Jinping invaded Taiwan right now, and toppled the president there, on what grounds would the United States object? Or have any credibility to say anything?

This is illuminating, @gelliottmorris.com, but a quibble: You write as if @WSJ is on the Fox side of the ledger.

It's not. You can't read the great WSJ reporting and think Trump is doing well on the economy. And even the paleo editorial page hits him relentlessly on tariffs.

This chart from G. Elliot Morris makes me wonder whether all the angst about newspaper "framing" isn't misplaced.

Twitter question:
While my Twitter feed is less useful than in the pre-Musk era, I keep the setting on "Following" and don't see a lot of bilge.

What I don't get is why so many people apparently subject themselves to the algorithm (via "For you").

What am I missing?

WSJ paleos have been relentless in hitting Trump's tariffs. Kudos. Also RFK's corruption.
WSJ editorial on the latest of the hundreds of tariff walkbacks by trump (this one for furniture): “Rarely has a President worked so hard to cover the damage from his policies without admitting it.”

Happy New Year! If you checked out ACA marketplace coverage for 2026 and saw yourself falling off the subsidy cliff...there may be a way to rappel back.
Gift of the malleable MAGI: Getting on the right side of the subsidy cliff
As Republicans have restored the ACA's income cap on subsidies for now, those with projected income modestly over the 400% FPL cap should look for legal ways to reduce the income that counts

We hope it's temporary but who knows
If you grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, as I did, the world is upside down, backwards and prolapsed. Though I pay attention to politics for a living, it's still hard for me to believe that my country, the United States, is aligned with Russia. As @dennycarter.bsky.social said, none of it makes sense.
BREAKING: A Russian newspaper today — “America no longer sees our country as a threat… The US leader’s philosophy is closer to the values of Russia’s president, not the politicians of the Old World… he sees Europe as a liberal stronghold that must be destroyed…”

Read that again.

I feel like "attention hacking" is most of politics now. The Minnesota aid fraud story is becoming a perfect example.

Recap: In 2022, the Biden DOJ filed the first charges against dozens of fraudsters, many of them Somali-American, who'd fleeced a state food aid program. (1/x)

Geo did leave this "music" playing from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m., and most likely far beyond.
