It's not in this article but the government asserts that the sandwich was thrown at "point blank range", which implies subway sandwiches have defined effective weapon ranges of varying lethality, and I would like to see the government's chart of these ranges.

With the wind this Halloween, be careful with jack-o'-lanterns or just don't light this year - esp if you're not at home. Fire risk elevated b/c of the wind.

On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

I had a Texas History teacher who made us listen to Rush Limbaugh during class and then discuss how brilliant he was
One teacher told us “apartheid was good for S Africa;” another lectured that FDR “ruined the country” by making Americans “lazy;” yet another wld force us to watch Alan Greenspan lectures and preface them by saying “now that’s a smart Jew” (the teacher ofc was not Jewish)

Anyone debating over whether a bunch of children “deserve” to be drowned in a flood over the associations of political beliefs in their community is just doing the same kind of moral reasoning that drives far right extremism, but leftishly

When I helped jumpstart DCist back in 2004, one of the motivations was The Washington Post's retreat from local news coverage.

For those reconsidering their news subscriptions, I suggest supporting @51st.news. It's a vital investment in the District's local reporting infrastructure.
To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the DCist shutdown, @ericfalquero.bsky.social reflects on that day and how far we’ve come in building The 51st.

Right now, we need 142 paid members to keep our fundraising on track. You can be one of them!
