I can't wait until 2 April to share this find from 1998 in the West Sussex Gazette: Adventurous life of Muffin by Alex Horne.

Newspaper clipping "Adventurous life of Muffin" by Alex Horne ( ‪@alexhorne.bsky.social‬ ) reads: One of Amberley's greatest personalities, Muffin the donkey, died recently, leaving a gap in the lives of Bob and Margo Edgcumbe-Rendle, who used to let him wander about their house as one of the family. Muffin was a house-donkey, about the size of an Irish wolf-hound, who will be missed by many who pass his field on their way to work, and remembered by some Amberley residents who used to drink with him in their local pub. But Muffin's life began in quite a different climate about 34 years ago in Calcutta, India, where his back was damaged beyond repair by hard labour - eventually Bob found him lying broken on a road after he had been deliberately hit by a taxi. He immediately sent him to a Government vet and Muffin's long road to a new life began. Muffin recovered and lived with the family until they had to leave India in 1972 and Bob said: "By then we just couldn't leave him behind." Unfortunately, it was not particularly simple to fly a donkey from India to England and quarantine regulations against African Horse Sickness meant Muffin's next home was in Italy where he was a sensation with the locals, although Bob said he couldn't quite understand why! The flight itself was fraught with complications - at first the authorities thought Bob must be smuggling gold or diamonds in his belly - why else would any one want a donkey? In the end, his box was hoisted by hand into the plane, with Italian writing on the side explaning: "I am a little donkey, please feed and water me." In 1974 Muffin was at last reunited with his family at Heathrow air-port and Bob remembers seeing a large box with two long hairy ears then Muffin emerging. [character limit reached]

Newspaper clipping: Comedy. The Horne Section Soho Theatre, W1. 4/5 stars. By Bruce Dessau. MADCAP Alex Horne certainly makes a comedy gig swing. Aided by his slick musicians, the bearded bandleader rattled through party games, wordplay and a mini-musical featuring trumpeter Joe Auckland wearing a vacuum cleaner on his head. There was even a pop classic given a Pina Bausch-style dance makeover. Anything goes with The Horne Section. This frivolously funny mash-up of music and mirth was a try-out for their Edinburgh Fringe return, so some ideas may not make the final cut. Asking drummer Ben Reynolds to circle his kit while playing a samba swiftly ran out of steam. But Horne is constantly creative and there were few truly bum notes. Last night's set also boasted special guests Jonny and the Baptists, whose current "Stop Ukip" tour upset the party's deputy leader Paul Nuttall. the duo's spot incldued some pithy teasing of Nigel Farage and a catchy ode to the German Chancellor: "We've come full circle, Angela Merkel." The Baptists played second fiddle, however to Horne. In a week when a major comedy musical has announced its imminent closure the highlight was his deliciously daft song-cycle starring Henry Hoover. Gillian's reviews are always a rollercoaster - she likes the show but says it in a way that sounds like she doesn't. A true titan of the craft.
Newspaper Clipping Radio Choice by Gillian Reynolds. Alex Horne Presents the Horne Section Radio 4 6.30pm. This is musical comedy, or rather comedy about music. It took me two shows to get to like it, to stop thinking of it as a bunch of posh lads too smart for their own good (and lucky enough to have gone to uni at a time when they didn't have to get themselves into hock for the privilege). Now it's the last in the series and I'm sad. Why? Because it is genuinely clever. Because it sounds like pals (or cousins, even brothers) having fun. Because it isn't more lefty hectoring. Because they really are good at music. Come back soon.
