28 November 2019 - The Horne Section at The Stables in Milton Keynes
Alex Horne has gathered some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians and mixed them with the most exciting comics in the country to create some unique and hilarious noises. It’s jazz-infused comedy, late, live and loud – part improvised, part horned, part performance, part party. Horne can normally be found lurking behind a laptop on things like BBC4’s We Need Answers but for this show he’ll be wearing a suit and singing songs. His band usually tour with Madness (and Girls Aloud) but now they’re riffing to the rhythm of comedy backed by some truly great comics. Much more than stand up, much more than music, this is the Horne Section. Premiering in Edinburgh in 2010, The Horne Section has since enjoyed sell-out runs at the Soho Theatre, Union Chapel and Lyric Theatre in the West End. The Horne Section has also played at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

My only reservation is that acid tongue might lead to stomach acid and tummy ache which isn't a great look for a superhero. This week's strong bill includes offbeat poet Tim Key, ever-so-nice Miles Jupp and The London Vegetable Orchestra. Horne blows a french horn. Joes look on. Joe, Mark and Alex dance waving hankies. Alex has an elaborate hat. Tim Key pours beer into Joe's upturned trumpet.

Top Gun on ice by Alex Horne ON A COLD WINTER'S EVENING - just cold enough for Peterborough's convenient indoor pond to freeze over - a typical English side consisting of six Canadians, an American, a Finn, three Brits and a Swede, gave America's best one hell of a beating. I was so proud. The game started frenetically with a sustained period of confusion that never really relented, fuelled by the continous flow of substitutes to and from the bench. The Blues came close to scoring twice in the opening moments but it was the Air Force's Maverick who grabbed the first with a neat flick into the corner. Cambridge then stamped their authority onto the game with a really big ice-boot thing, scoring 4 times in quick succession through Per Kallblad, the captain Alex McGuckin and Juha Mutanen, all with their own neat flicks into the corner. It's the only way to score. The game was so fast that I actually missed the fourth goal when I suppose I must have blinked, or gone to get a Mars bar, or something. The brilliantly incomprehensible team talk at the end of the first period roused the Cambridge side even further and they set up camp in the Americans' penalty area for much of the rest of the game. Goals then came easily for McGuckin, Juha, Proudfoot and Perrin and the Blues mesmerised even the fish beneath the ice with some crisp passing and fluid skating. Ice Queen Mike Fryer also provided the guaranteed violence of the game, pulling off a triple pirouette (with pike) before slamming into the player with the biggest moustache and screaming "Jester's dead!" Goals from America's Hollywood and Goose opened the final 20 minutes but Henry 'Spanky Perrin soon calmed things down with one of his own. This inspired the outstanding Juha, who almost certainly would have been on fire if it wasn't so cold, as he brought his personal tally up to six with three thunderous goals in quick succession. 19 November 2011 - Radio 2 Comedy Spectacular For Children In Need airs.

At the last minute, Radio 2’s annual Children In Need comedy gala moved from the 1,100-seat Shepherds Bush Empire to the 300-seat Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House – and still there were empty seats. Quite why Londoners stayed away is a riddle, especially as the show prominently featured the Horne Section, who are currently enjoying a successful Saturday-night residency in the West End. Their handler, Alex Horne, hosted, while the expert band, led by preternaturally talented pianist Joe Stilgoe, improvised jingles and provided backing tracks for the comedians – either prepared or ad libbed – plus the odd ‘badoom-tish’ rim shot. It all gave proceedings a more relaxed, jazzier vibe than most comedy night, and befitted Radio 2’s musical remit. Comedy rapper Doc Brown made full use of the band, as you might hope, accompanying his tongue-in-cheek rhyme in which he ascribes every misfortune that befalls him to racism. Better still was the self-defence rap Kick Him In The Balls, since its advice was delivered with such phoney machismo. Brown didn’t think it would make it past the BBC censors, but hopefully it will. With the right video, this has ‘viral hit’ written all over it. Joe Lycett won the audience’s affections with his charming yet childish camp, discussing his love of farts and and the gay dating iPhone app Grindr, which allows users to find like-minded souls nearby. However, relating his interactions, first with a Grindr user, and then with a viewer who sent hate mail following his appearance on TV, had diminishing returns. Finally, a rare live appearance from Peter Serafinowicz, with a list of one-liners – or extracts from his deservedly popular Twitter feed, if you prefer – with the Horne Section rim-shotting every punchline. The quality was wildly inconsistent, but, my, the best gags were truly exceptional examples of tricksy wordplay. Finally in the first half, Nick Helm, doing a rare swear-free set – though the brooding aggression and self-loathing was all still present and correct. This wreck of a man started with a dark, nightmarish tale with no apparent humour, until a great left-field payoff that, frankly, deserved more from the crowd. Then on through some audience intimidation, his four actual jokes, and his growled-out musical number I Fancy The Hell Out Of You - with impressive improvised backing from the Horne Section – in which he sounds like Chas N Dave after nine pints of Special Brew. Great stuff.

What works so well is each act’s immersion into the world that Horne and his sidemen have created. Both the music and the winningly haphazard presentation put a stamp of distinctiveness on to the evening, which astute guests fully buy into, ensuring a consistent atmosphere and the feeling this is so much more than the sum of its already entertaining parts. This really is a Horne of plenty.

Newspaper clipping: Magic display trounces Alex Horne watches Blues wizardry dispatch Dubliners THE FIRST HALF WAS GREAT. AND NOT just because of the quality rugby: I got to sit next to injured winger Tom Turmezei. Oh yes. Apart from his countless shiny gems of wisdom he brought with him the new book, Roger's Profanisaurus, which was to entertain the hordes of barboured supporters throughout the first forty minutes. More of that later. The predictable pattern for the match was set early on as the Blues kept possession, recycled the ball well and piled on the pressure. Incidentally, these opening exchanges also saw the first of three balls to be kicked out of the massive Grange Road stadium, this one making a dull thud as it hospitalised an innocent passer-by. Back on the pitch the Blues soon started scoring lots of points. Complete possession resulted in one try for Mark ‘Robbo' Robinson and two for Adam 'Bidders' Bidwell. Japanese international Kensuke 'Oh my God, they killed Kenny’ Iwabuchi also looked impressive coming into the line from full-back and arousing unprecedented claims from the crowd that he was ‘magic’. The tries kept pouring in with skipper Matty Foulds leading his dynamic pack by example and it was Stef Rodgers who scored next, no matter how much the match commentator wanted him to be called Stiff Rogers. Adam Bidwell then completed an outstanding hat-trick on his return from injury with the help of Kenny's sleight of hand. This fifth try also produced Robin Morrow's first conversion of the afternoon which in turn produced a rousing, if not <'lightly ironic 'hurrah' from the crowd. Alt Text continued in next image. So at 27-0 after just 20 minutes, Tom pulled out the Profanisaurus which, apparently, is the ultimate swearing dictionary. Now, this is hardly the time for a literary review but I must say that I was frankly baffled by the imaginative usage of the English language. We had just reached ’clam jousting’ when our attention was dragged back to the game by the unmistakable clatter of leather on china as another ball found its way out of the ground and this time landed remarkably in an unsuspecting cup of tea. Meanwhile Kenny the Magician suddenly exploded through the defence (he's really very good) allowing Mark Denney to finish in style and Morrow to confound his critics with a confident conversion, before Denney snatched his second try of the game after a slick switch in the centres. Unfortunately the second half started disappointingly without Tom and his educational book. And suddenly things weren't looking much better on the field either as Kenny tried to confuse the opposition with card tricks and ‘guess the number’, but it was children’s party stuff, nothing special. In truth the Dubliners found new resilience to get a grip on the match, defending like terriers as the Blues continued to keep possession. Still no amount of defending could stop Mark ‘Speed of the puma’ Denney bursting through to set up a try for Hamish ‘No nickname’ Innes, and consistently good handling in the forwards and a cracking run from Robbo resulted in glory for substitute Nick Buoy with his first touch. Apart from that there was little to shout or write about but for a distant splash as another ball was dismissed from the stands - this time landing at the bottom of a 15th Century well until Kenny at last remembered some more complicated magic words, transporting himself across the line in a puff of smoke and helping to create another excellent try for Denney. In fact with 5 long minutes to go and just 63 points down it was Dublin's hopes of victory that were at last raised when their fly-half Mark McHugh scored a simply indescribable try. But these hopes were cruelly dashed minutes later when full-back Will Martel was sent off for punching Mark Denney too loudly. Final score: a convincing 63-5 win for the Blues, but against a weak opposition the score should really have been higher. As Mr Turmezei wisely remarked, the gulf between the Blues and other university sides has become just too large for sensible games as the tendency for club teams to nick players at the weekend increases. I don't want to delve too deeply into the details, but the gist of it is this: Gordon and Christine Bowker spent four years monitoring some black grouse in Wales, concluding eventually that the birds were in danger. Some scientists from the RSPB said that actually, it may have been the couple themselves putting the birds in danger. Now they're all heading for the High Court - except for the black grouse, that is. For non-birdwatchers, this makes little sense. If the Bowkers cared enough about the birds to spend four years watching them, why would they want to harm them? And why do these people care so much about birds anyway? My father is a birdwatcher, which may explain why, until January 2005, I was not. It's an easy hobby to shun, spurn or sneer at, especially when you're a teenager. But with fatherhood on the horizon, I decided to give it a go. To ensure it was a fair trial, challenged my dad to a race: who could see the most species in one year? That way, I was committed for at least 12 months. The first lesson was that the term "birdwatcher" has many shades. My dad, for example, volunteers at his local bird reserve and willingly carries out bird surveys, but that's apathetic compared to some. The extremists of the birdwatching world are the "twitchers" - the fanatical collectors, the men and women prepared to pay any price to get a new bird on their list. This week, this particular species was the subject of a BBC documentary, twitchers: A Very British Obsession, which chronicled the extraordinary journeys made to spot, or miss, a new bird. Watching twitchers twitching was gripping stuff (and well worth catching on the BBC iPlayer). But the film also highlighted a less obvious side of the pursuit: the crucial role played by reputation. Despite advances in photography, spotting birds is a hobby based on trust. If someone says they've seen a particular species, one has to believe them. If evidence is produced to prove the claimant mistaken, innocently or otherwise. their reputation is ruined. A mistrusted birder can find themselves estranged from an already marginalised community I was especially intrigued by the documentary because, of all the possible birdwatching styles. twitching was the one to which I gravitated most readily. While my dad loves the birds themselves, and could happily spend an afternoon staring at a pigeon, I liked the competition. On one occasion, I drove for five hours to see a long-billed murrelet, only for the lost Japanese bird to flee minutes before my arrival. I didn't mind: I enjoyed the chase. Twitchers are often accused of not caring about the welfare of the birds they pursue, and I accept that I was more interested in the numbers than the individuals. In fact, disappointment was as crucial a part of the process as nil-nil draws are in football. I'd heard about the bird via a website called Birdline (a vidiprinter for rare sightings), weighed up the cost and decided that the journey was worth it. A flock of twitchers sprang into similar action this week, when word spread online that an American kestrel was lurking in Suffolk. This time, the bird obligingly hung around, but it wasn't long before someone noticed a ring round its leg: it had escaped from the Suffolk Ow Sanctuary, so it wouldn't count on any lists. Five years on, and I've lost the itch to twitch. Instead, I am now a proud casual birdwatcher. I may not wear binoculars at all times, but I automatically tune in to birdsong, and still get excited by the sight of a goldfinch. All hobbies are irrational to some extent. If you didn’t know by now, don’t worry – it’ll probably gather a more momentum when I break into the top 3 billion. So far my attempt is going well. I’m still alive. That’s all I can really hope for at this stage (apart from some rapid premature ageing on my part which I don’t really want or some rapid apocalyptic disaster killing everyone older than me which I don’t really want either). Since telling people about this attempt I have become known, to a small extent, as the guy who is trying to become very old. I’m fine with that. But recently I’ve become increasingly aware of another guy, a rival perhaps, who looks like he’s going to become very old but who seems to be doing everything in his power to make that not to happen. He’s inching closer to the title reluctantly. He already looks like he could be the oldest man in the world and he clearly doesn’t give a damn. He really doesn’t care if what he does might kill him but he’s still very much alive. He’s already twice my age. And his name is Keith Richards.

But on a perfect pitch under a cloudless sky, the Blues looked just as bright and keen to win, boosted by the return from injury of captain Mark Pett. Playing against the strong wind in the first half, it was the Navy who piled on the early pressure with a powerful shot from able-seaman Hope, a cracking own-goal attempt from Cambridge's Andy Fearnley, and then disastrously, a soft goal from a weak clearance by Blues keeper Dan Madden. Despite some skillful football from the likes of Andy Jennings and Mark Walsh, the game then deteriorated into an ugly midfield battle. The wind was making the game extremely tight, but my eyes that could never really compete. with the tightness of the referees white T-shirt which he probably put on after spilling something on his black one. Behind us, meanwhile, the Blues subs James Purshouse and Ian Brooksbank were doing a very sexy warm-up routine which I instantly recognized from the secret Jane Fonda video hidden under my bed, while the Navy boys did the hornpipe, whatever that is. On the pitch, Andy Jennings and Tom "Tino Fearnley combined to take the wind out of the Navy's sails for a while, Tino neatly rounding the keeper after a masterstroke of a through-bal from Jennings the like of which you simply can't coach. There followed a sustained period of pressure from the Blues, spurred on by lan Mowat's frankly painful tackles and some excellent work from Madden making up for his early mistake. At one point, however, Madden was blatantly and quite rightly ignored when he started shouting “use me, use me" in the Cambridge goal. I have no idea what he wanted. Cont'd - So at 1-1 things were looking good for the Blues at half-time until a transformed Navy side emerged from the dressing-up-room. Within seconds cabin-boy Keaton had viciously head-butted our own Mark Walsh (well, I suppose it was more of a fifty-fifty), Peter Husband was hacked down in a particularly vicious challenge, then first-mate Sudlow was booked for threatening behaviour with a knife. (Two of those are true.) But against the Navy's sheer strength the Blues never really looked like winning. Mark Pett said afterwards that "the lads showed grit and determination and didn't give up", but this was simply not enough. He also said, "We can beat anyone if we keep the ball on the deck", which made me laugh and laugh, because boats have decks, so I laughed and laughed until I realised everybody else had gone home.
