Scientists,

I am asking us to do something that goes against our nature:

Step away from fine-grained, nuanced arguments. Zoom WAY out. Share the big picture. Don’t soften the seriousness of this moment with “xxx may be ok in xxx circumstances” talk.

It’s uncomfortable AND necessary.

For those of you who knew Victoria Brownworth on Twitter, she passed away from cancer yesterday.

She was a fearless journalist who reported on AIDS in the 80s (when Reagan was ignoring it), lifted up the LGBTQ community, & rooted out corruption.

Her wife, Maddy Gold, died of cancer in 2022.

Good thread
I was part of the first cohort of folks to transition in the military after the Carter policy in 2016. Now my career is being cut short

This is far from the greatest injustice in the US today, but I'm still angry

I want to talk a bit about what that's been like, if only to help me process it

I don’t use AI in my writing or book covers. Period. Any messes are my own.
This BookBub survey on authors and AI use says that "74% of the authors who use generative AI do not disclose their AI use to readers."

I want to be very clear that I DO NOT use generative AI in my books. Share your work here if that's true for you also!
How Authors are Thinking About AI (Survey of 1,200+ Authors)
We surveyed more than 1,200 authors to learn how they're thinking about generative AI as it relates to their work. Here's what they had to say.

A1. I have a job, great family, supportive friends, and strong community. Not to be Pollyanna-ish, but I'm doing as well as I can, given everything. #WeeknightWriters
Q1: How are you holding up this week? Vent as much as you need to, this is a safe space (as safe as any public social media space can be) #WeeknightWriters

100% same. AI is NOT the same. I pay good money for my audiobooks to have sexy, gorgeous narrative voices. I’ll end my Audible subscription over this.
The way I will literally listen to certain narrators narrate ANYTHING because they’re amazing but have stopped audiobooks two lines in and bought the paperback because I don’t vibe with the voice at all - like wtf a narrator is an artist

FUCK GEN AI AND FUCK YOU IF YOU USE THIS
Fuck this, absolutely fuck this, everyone who loves audiobooks loves their favourite narrators because they are great at their jobs and interpreting the author's words and they make the experience what it is www.theguardian.com/books/2025/m...

I'm definitely on the struggle bus this month!

I've got two released books and way too many in progress.

More than anything, I'd like to sell a physical book, but both my works are available as eBooks too!

Laughs in GenX.

I promise you too can survive on hose water and neglect
I see techbros on the daily telling me I won’t be able to survive without gen AI and I’ll be left behind without it - like does that fear-mongering work when you say it in the mirror to yourself or something? I promise you’ll survive without gen AI lmfao. You have a brain!!

I want to see this in real time. I want to see their heads actually explode 🤯
absolutely shrieking at the thought of the Catholic US Supreme Court justices having to decide what the fuck to do with a Catholic plaintiff who says it’s religious discrimination to be forced by their employer to use AI
Wait does this mean we can use religious exemptions for good??

"I can't use AI, the Pope says it's a sin." 🥹

#SFFChat A3: I reread Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater, and will probably read the rest of the trilogy; they are great comps for my book. I may also reread the Lyra trilogy because it rocks. I also read Casting Sacred Space by Ivo Dominguez Jr.

#SFFChat A2: My MC is tall, taking as she does after her twin, Mr Phineas Barrow. She has no bone to pick with her plump figure, but if she could, she wouldn’t be taller than her beaus. It’s quite awkward being nearly 1.8 meters tall!
#SFFChat Q2: If your MC (or any character of yours you'd like to highlight) could change one thing about their body, what would it be?

#SFGChat A1: My MC, Philadelphia Barrow, is a an absolutely gorgeous large bodied woman in the era of corsets and reducing diets (alt Regency England). But in my book, she’s considered highly attractive and it’s secondary to the story. This is a book where large bodied women are adored. Bring it on.
#SFFChat Q1: What's the significance of the body/bodies in SFF?

I know this question sounds intimidating, but approach it however you like! Maybe there's some unique worldbuilding that involves cultural attitudes toward the body. Maybe your MC has a particular view/attitude to do with their body

#SFFChat Intro

“A few months on a reducing diet and you’ll be the envy of the ton!” Aunt Swinton piped.

Philly wanted to take offense at this. She felt she should take offense at this. Yet she had no intention of coming out this season, and every intention of remaining a happy eccentric forever.”
#SFFChat Intro: Introduce yourself and share a recent favourite line you're proud of (or a less recent one if you prefer!).

Also, apologies for the lateness!!! My schedule's kind of bizarre atm as I'm now dog-sitting.
