The airstrike struck a detention centre holding more than a hundred African migrants in the city of Saada, killing 68 and injuring 47, according to the Houthis. The Iran-aligned rebel group, which governs north-west Yemen, said the centre was under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Red Cross and targeting it "constitutes a full-fledged war crime".

Completely overwhelmed by the weirdness of the dodo bird situation, I looked away from the birds to seek some evidence of normalcy. Perfectly ordinary-looking evergreen and deciduous trees surrounded the small clearing where the van was parked. The ground was very rocky and there were large boulders scattered around the site. Those were unusual, but I knew from my reading that a glacier used to run through Acadia National Park, which explained the rocks. But just as my nerves began to settle, I was startled by a group of enormous stag-moose walking across the clearing, grazing on the grass and making loud animal noises. They looked just like Scotti’s siblings, except these animals were clearly not human. Lake noticed my reaction. “Don’t worry, Squints,” they explained. “Only docile animals who want to interact with humans live on camp.” “I’m not worried,” I lied. I was very worried. The thought of having a drill sergeant as a cabin counselor already gave me palpitations. The realization that he was actually a stag-moose and there were a whole army of his cousins out here? Completely terrifying. And while I tried to tell myself that they were all simply workers in costume, the way that the creatures moved and munched on grass showed me that I was deceiving myself. They sauntered fluidly, with none of the disjointedness that would come from an 8-foot costume hanging from a biped creature. My stomach filled with jitters.

#SFFChat I have a few. Schroedinger, the MC’s companion, is a Ojos Azules cat, a blue-eyed domestic cat that is extinct in the wild (but has been brought back by some breeders, hence the name Schroedinger).

My other favorite is Scotti the stag-moose. He’s the drill sergeant like cabin counselor.

The assault on Harvard is less about the school itself (there are and will be others) but attempted federal control of private universities. The assault on law firms is less about each firm's business with the federal government than about frightening firms from taking on cases the administration opposes. Each principle - due process, educational freedom and right to representation - has implications for everyone regardless of party affiliation or leaning.

This scene is from Camp Dodo, my novel in beta stage. Maggie (10 YOF) has just discovered that Opal (12 YOF) has been stealing and reading letters from her Dad all summer. The book is dual POV (Maggie/Opal), but this scene is from Maggie's POV. Alt text included for ease of reading.
Chapter 32: Mourning (Maggie) Letters. So many letters. Eight weeks of letters. Dad had written every week of camp, a few times twice. I missed him so much. Tears streamed from my eyes and I sobbed and choked on my snot as I read through his words. He was fine. Conrad was doing great at the store. He had some ridiculous ideas for a video game that involved riding dolphins while looking for the lost city of Atlantis. (Not a bad idea, but Atlantis was done in DB World 13). He wasn’t sure why I was so frantic about missing letters but he assured me he was perfectly healthy and I needed to stop freaking out. I stared at the lily pads. I missed all of my classes. I missed lunch. Jack and Lake came looking for me and I told them to go away. When they tried to insist, I actually yelled at them. Schroedinger came by to comfort me because I recall petting him absentmindedly. Mostly, though, I sat alone. I preferred it that way. I’d been completely violated.
