Application review launches on December 1, 2025. We want to read *your* application outlining a vision for a research program deciphering how membrane proteins collaborate to enable cell function, their biosynthesis, and the biophysics and structure of how membrane proteins change shape.
Molecular & Cellular Physiology (MCP) Monday

We are recruiting a tenure-track assistant professor to join the Dept of Molecular & Cellular Physiology at Stanford. Apply to be our colleague. Please repost. 1/n

Grants office just offered a narrow interpretation that only the 10 listed pubs can be called out in the supplement.

Ha, ha, ha.

One thing I do not like is the embedded idea that contributions to science are captured in 5-10 publications. Some contributions build over years and multiple papers…sometimes more than 5.

Yup. Leaves me inclined toward declining the subsequent request to review.

cognitive reframing ahead of quals:

❌ I will be stuck in a room with a firing squad of friends and allies whose eyes will go red like robots in the movies for 2 hours to grill me

✅ THEY will be stuck in there with ME while I talk a 2 hour blue streak about my very favorite stuff in the world 😌

Thank you! Roger’s legacy is full of color and playfulness. He is missed.
Today, I would like to honor the memory of Roger Y. Tsien, born on February 1, 1952. His legacy lives with all who use his technologies, including calcium sensors, fluorescent proteins, the acetoxymethyl (AM) ester, & many more! #FluorescenceFriday

#wormwednesday how to be sure, really sure that you will not fail to run away from noxious chemicals…
Friends! I am so happy to share our new preprint!

Hydrogen peroxide has been the most common reactive chemical threat to life forms since the Great Oxygenation Event 2.5 billion years ago.

How do animals like C. elegans sense it fast and escape?

There is always the Clandinin rule: Estimate the time, double the number, and increase the unit by one notch. 1 day = 2 weeks. Does that help?

A collaborator of my PhD advisor asked me why he insisted on training women, since they would all leave to have children. I did not have kids at that time, but told him I hope he was better at knowing his audience when giving seminars and walked away.
January 19, 2026 at 5:19 PM
At an evening event/dinner-talk with students, the other faculty presenter said “I know you have small kids, would you like to speak first so you can get home to them.” Students were shocked by this line which simultaneously undermined me as a scientist & mother.

Amplifying for greater reach
Hey all, I reached out to the PO of my NIGMS MIRA to ask if the gov't shut down, and rescheduling of study sections, might allow for some accommodation to the standard rule that PIs cannot resubmit a MIRA while their MIRA (or other RPG) is under review (waiting in scores or summary statements) 🧪
