![SECONDARY TRAUMA
Traumatic breaking news is everywhere. It ambushes us. Secondary trauma (vicarious trauma) is a mental health threat. It's what journalists, healthcare workers, and social media mods experience when they cover tragedies like casualty events or interview violent crime survivors. Right-wing assholes thrive on crushing our empathy, but humans are naturally empathetic. Empathy, like diversity, is our power. Let's protect it, sharpen it.
"Secondary trauma - aka compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, or secondary traumatic stress - occurs when someone is significantly impacted by someone else's trauma," per PsychCentral. It can lead to PTSD-like symptoms (depression, apathy, anger, helplessness, nightmares, hypervigilance). It's seldom acknowledged and often stigmatized when it's from news or social media.
What's going on inside? The answer is: A perfectly reasonable, but unpleasant response. Play Tetris, Pokemon Go, Candy Crush, or any game you like. This is called "imagery-competing task intervention," and a 2025 study found that 20 minutes of Tetris on their phones helped reduce PTSD symptoms in healthcare workers coping with secondary trauma.
