An Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft released a dropsonde in the northern eyewall of Hurricane Melissa at 26/1915Z, and it showed winds of 150-180mph between roughly 1000 and 3000 feet elevation.

There's lots of areas in Jamaica at those elevations.

Sadly, it still could strengthen further.

So _that’s_ where my Magic 8-Ball went!

But in all seriousness science and scientists in and out of government are under assault by a regime that is the embodiment of Dunning-Kruger. The damage will last decades. 🤬
Concur. This is another great clip from @ellecordova.bsky.social.

But it hits especially hard.
Simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking. (Pssst - federally funded science saves lives) 🧪

I thought Chronic Venous Insufficiency described a narcissist whose actual achievements fell far short of their opinion of themselves.

Oh wait - that’s Chronic Vainous Insufficiency.

My mistake - but in this case I'd argue it's an easy to get the two mixed up.

This just in: Heard and McDonald Islands run massive trade surplus with US based totally upon guano exports to GOP. “We need those imports to stay full of it,” says GOP source.

This got several chuckles from me, but also made me wish that there was a larger gap these days between reality and farce.

I _so_ wish Carney had asked Myers, "What's going on down there?" with Myers replying in his best Shrek voice, "Eh, they're just compensating for something."

I just got back from 36 hours in Ukraine with my brother Scott. Wanted to share a story from while we were there. At a hospital, we talked with a wounded Ukrainian soldier.

I asked him what he thought about the recent change in US policy. His response in English was, “What the fuck.”

That cup of Starbucks coffee in front of you? It cost you more than you paid all last year for NOAA and the forecasts, warnings, and data it provides.
A sobering — and critical — 4 minutes from my colleagues in Pennsylvania about the hollowing out of the National Weather Service and its parent organization, NOAA.

Massive thanks to Marissa Ferger and @roblydick.bsky.social.

This post has become even more horrifyingly relevant in the last month.
There's a very interesting SF novel by Harry Turtledove, Guns of the South, about white 20th century South Africans time-traveling to Civil War America to help out "guess which side" with weapons & tech. No idea what's made me think of that.
