I have a new essay with @journalspectre.bsky.social in which I survey two texts that I take as illustrative of our moment in history. Personally this essay was a moment to reflect and think through some problems that have been bugging me for some time now.

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

“reality tv is inherently fascist” is my most consistently vindicated hot take of all time
Kristi Noem has been working with the producer of “Duck Dynasty” to pitch a reality TV show—titled “The American”—where immigrants will compete in a string of challenges across the country “for the honor of fast-tracking their way to U.S. citizenship,” according to a new report.
Noem Plots Reality Show Where Migrants Fight for Citizenship
A Homeland Security official told the Daily Beast that the show is in the early stages of vetting, though approval has not been given—or denied.

It’s Jan. 6. If you really want to understand what happened four years ago today and why, you should do yourself a favor and buy my book. It’s a heavy lift (450 pages, 980 endnotes) but worth the effort. Not to mention an essential source text.

I said before, and I will say again, Netflix’s selection of movies is worse than your average neighborhood videostore
THE STING (1973) is now the oldest American narrative film on Netflix — one of only 5 released before 1980 on the largest subscription streaming service in the U.S.

Israel is killing Palestinians in Gaza on Christmas Eve.

Israel has been killing Palestinians every day for more than a year.

Every day, Palestinians in Gaza face new and unimaginable horrors and massacres.

The U.S. supports, funds, and is complicit in this genocide.

When capitalists see fascists as the political answer to declining economic growth, it is a literal x-ray into the morally empty pragmatism behind bourgeoise ideology. They will do anything to serve the idea of society!
The AfD is controversial even among other European far-right parties because many of its leaders are not shy about expressing Nazi sympathies.

And Elon Musk is straight up applauding them, calling the party Germany’s last, best hope.

I recently read The Other Oregon by Thomas R. Cox, which analyzes the history of the Eastern part of the state. This region is in the rain shadow of the Cascades, so it's much drier. It's also more rural and conservative. The economy has historically been based on natural resource extraction 💙📚
