Speaking of that "crisis of confidence" speech from Carter... That national solar bank accounting for 20 percent of American energy sounds mighty fine right about now... 25-30 years late, maybe, but never too late to cut dependence on fossil fuels, right?

Man, remember when Jimmy Carter gave that "crisis of confidence" speech? I don't, because I wasn't alive then. But I sure am thinking about that right now, for a lot of reasons.

You ever sit in a library pondering that perhaps everything has gone to shit, but then you look out the window and see the sky and trees and remember the Earth spins on regardless, and you just gotta give the Earth a round of applause in your head like "Good job Earth, give it up for the Earth!"

Megyn Kelly - as it is with all like her - feeds off your anger. She lives to consume your time and energy. And yet her cravenness will consume her, and history will only record her dark nature. Amen.

Ohtani winning NL MVP: Makes sense, Tungsten Arms O’Doyle, historic performances, World Series winner, fine

Judge winning AL MVP: The entire city of Seattle should march to the Bronx and rip Yankee Stadium down to the studs out of spite. Justice for Big Dumper.

Once more I declare that while my connection to any sort of religion is similar to that of a 56k modem (slow, old, falling apart), even I can tell you this is the kind of thing Jesus would have flipped tables over.
A new digital awakening is unfolding in churches, where pastors and prayer apps are turning to artificial intelligence to reach worshippers, personalize sermons, and power chatbots that resemble God.
Meet chatbot Jesus: Churches tap AI to save souls and time as pews get more empty
Chatbots answer prayers and algorithms write sermons.

In terms of professional fulfillment, I feel it the most when I write music, and when I write about other people's music. It lets people know that someone - even if it's just a strange man in his house in New England - is listening.

Great insight here and a reminder of why staff-owned publications like @defector.com and @aftermath.site and @flaminghydra.com et al are so important. To this day I still curse Jim Spanfeller's name.

FIFTY years ago today, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew members on board. As we must every November 10th, let us memorialize these souls with Gordon Lightfoot's ballad "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald": www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuzT...

Just called @warren.senate.gov and @markey.senate.gov to say good on them for voting "No" on the cloture vote last night, and asked if they could knock some sense into Schumer and the Dems who caved. Go Mass, baby.
November 10, 2025 at 1:41 PM
Ok, so the shutdown isn't over yet. The Senate's final vote hasn't happened. Which means there may still be time.

(Which is a very hopeful and copeful thing to say. I know.)
November 10, 2025 at 1:32 PM
Don’t get it twisted, The entire GOP would rather see us starve, weak moderate Dems will cave to them, and stronger establishment Dems may look good and vote fine but they won’t pressure their weak moderate colleagues to give the GOP the finger. This is why people are tired of this system. Enough.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!
November 9, 2025 at 12:10 AM
Dems: The funding bills on which you’ve asked us to vote put Americans at a serious disadvantage. We won’t budge.

GOPs: Okay, but what if… we put Americans at MORE of a disadvantage… AND we banned abortion, just for kicks?
Senate update: Republicans are now trying to sneak a backdoor national abortion ban into their government funding bill. Republicans will stop at nothing to control women's health care decisions.
