Excited about archives, walkable neighborhoods, marmalade toast, and listening to records with my dog.
Listened to this album a couple times while driving around town today, and it rips from start to finish.

I think we’ve severely undervalued the impact of local newspapers in making for a more harmonious and informed society. Instead these news deserts have been filled by angry national outlets and local Facebook pages that reward hostility.

No news hook sorry (‘Trump take egg’? ‘RFK take vaccine’?? maybe!) but here’s a new piece by me in Slate talking about kitchen aesthetics & ideology, John Berger’s The Eaters and the Eaten, food anxieties, and the Tartine bread book: slate.com/business/202...
The Unnerving Meaning of the Two Kinds of Instagram Kitchens
They look different, but they underscore the same anxieties.

Finally listening to this brilliant compilation from @petepaphides.bsky.social / @needlemythology.bsky.social on this rainy Saturday. Really spectacular stuff, and absolutely engrossing liner notes.

Day 13. Sarah Martin (Belle and Sebastian)

Not the type to seek the spotlight but an integral part to the beauty of B&S : violin, keyboards, vocals, she does it all and gave us some very special songs 👏

I don't know what the death of civilised America is going to sound like; but the dull metallic stamp of a pneumatic drill breaking up the Black Lives Matter mural on 16th Street yesterday morning felt like some sort of premonition.

Reading about the insane numbers of books that ordinary working people used to read a hundred years ago feels like seeing pictures of the Pacific Ocean back when it teemed with whales. Hard to comprehend what we’ve lost.

paris proves it: when we stop designing cities for cars and start designing them for people, the air clears, the streets come alive, and life gets better. less smog, more green. less noise, more joy. fewer fumes, more kids playing safely. this isn't some hippy dream, it's a choice.
