Dick Durbin suffers from a terminal case of Senate Brain, in which the big prize is a handshake deal with your distinguished colleagues where they'll allow you to hold a meaningless vote that you can then point to with pride to your constituents as they go broke from crushing medical bills.
Durbin said critics of his vote “need to understand how the Senate works”

Even the senators who are retiring and think they won't have to face the wrath of furious Democratic voters should know that their last name is about to become so toxic that not even a goddamn nonprofit is going to want you on the board.
I think Senate folders are significantly underestimating how fucking angry Democratic voters are at them

The ability to remove your post when a hostile account quote-tweets you is a great feature of Bluesky.

To do it, go to their quote-tweet of you, click on the three dots in the bottom right, then click “detach quote.”

It shows up as “removed by author.”

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.

It’s probably a good time for people to wrap their heads around a near total monopoly of news and media by either overt fascists or fascist-friendly accomplices.

This isn’t doomerism, it’s preparing for how reality will be warped and weaponized and understanding the fight we have in front of us.

Luckily, Sinclair has a helpful database of all their stations, so you can see if they're operating in your area and respond accordingly.

I don't think it's possible to overstate what a profound political realignment this is, or how completely the leaders of the Democratic Party (for now) have failed to recognize it. At their peril.
You'd think every Democratic candidate in NYC would be falling over themselves to embrace BDS and call for an arms embargo. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/10/n...

I just want to scream on a regular basis at how terrible current Democratic leadership is. Democrats want to help Republicans resolve a very tangible bad thing they did that voters will hate, resolving it will only help Republicans avoid accountability. And in exchange Democrats ask for nothing.
Here's gov't shutdown in a nutshell:

GOP needs two things (a) pass budget bill (b) fix ACA cut that will go into effect before midterms.

The Dem strategy is to give the GOP both in exchange for nothing then blame the Dem base for not understanding how good that is.

The president is sending the military to control American cities and if you're a reporter who's framing that illegal power grab as "pushing the boundaries of constitutionality" or "acting boldly to fight crime" or whatever, please go find another line of work where you won't get us all killed.

As some of you know, I am currently writing a book about the last 80 years of popular culture as it connects to the history of the gay rights movement. The narrative will stop some time before 2025, but--bonus!--you will get to see people say dumb shit like this almost word for word in 1962.
