Autistic people are at increased risk of police violence, and more training is not the answer.
Former legislative staffer and current autistic here. This is all very good advice! Calls really do matter, but all you need to do is demonstrate that you’re a constituent, name the issue that you’re calling about and give it a thumbs up or thumbs down.
Tips for Autistics to shake phone anxiety & call reps:
1) Body double, live or virtual. Have a friend call!
2) Have a written script! it's ok to sound like you're reading directly from it. You don't need to mask, but you DO need to be clear
3) Have 1-3 SPECIFIC issues to address. Ex: DOE & RFK!

And, what, all of this was so people could get on airplanes at thanksgiving, a thing NO ONE actually wants to do?

Seeing @bradlander.bsky.social emphasize this at the @localprogress.bsky.social convening this summer helped give me the inspiration I needed to stay in the fight.
There’s so much to fight for and so much joy in doing it together.

Dick Durbin gets to retire in comfort while I see myself sliding further away from the middle class with every passing month and face the prospect of no health insurance as I face ever higher risks of illness in middle age and beyond

I am incandescently furious at the absolute lack of humanity and leadership we’ve seen tonight. Losing the ACA will kill people, and pissing it away for absolutely no gain is unforgivable.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

I feel like I’ve told the story of my mom’s death and how she’d be alive today if the ACA had been enacted a year earlier over and over again and I don’t have the energy to do it again, but trading the ACA to reinstate SNAP benefits is a fool’s bargain. We can feed people AND give them health care.

Hi @schumer.senate.gov and @kirstengillibrand.bsky.social! If you vote for this horrible deal, I will spend the next 4 years making sure you are both primaried and retired from the US Senate.

Autistic people are and always have been targets for fascists.
ICE agents in Chicago violently detain a non verbal autistic man for being “non compliant”
He couldn’t “comply” because of his disability…they don’t care
This is not the first time they’ve gone after a disabled person
They target the most vulnerable because it’s an easy way to meet their quota

Republicans running anti-trans hatefests lost and Zohran Mamdani is a hugely vocal supporter of trans and other LGBTQ rights.
That is MASSIVELY important to look at and run on.
Roll around in all this & soak it in. This is the good shit, & it should be celebrated.
And then it should be Built on.

mamdani is human. he'll fuck up and fail, especially with a hostile press and the giant mess that is nyc's politics. but today is a great day for the brave women who told what cuomo did, and for those of us who care that it should matter. that power shouldn't go to those who hurt the poweless.
I'm happy that Mamdani won. But I won't let that get in the way of my celebrating Cuomo losing.

I moved out of NYC 5 years ago because @plrock.bsky.social and I couldn't afford to have a kid there. I love where we live now but I'm so hopeful that NYC might become a place where middle class families can thrive again.

A lot of Very Serious People will be pretending to be confused about What This All Means as a way to avoid the simple inconvenient reality: Voters like it when candidates are kind sincere non-weirdos who are passionate about big popular ideas that will actually help real people.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
