As someone who’s both seen Apocalypse Now and read Heart of Darkness, I’ll say that Will is at least partially correct. Heart of Darkness is mostly about the evils of Euro racial colonialism (particularly Belgian). The movie is….decidedly not that!
Since we’re apparently talking about the politics of 70s-era blockbuster auteurs, my actual controversial viewpoint is that APOCALYPSE NOW isn’t very coherently political. I spent a lot of time as an anti-Iraq War youth trying to use it as an anti-war movie, but it’s just bad for that.

ICE raids at “vulnerable places” (schools, hospitals) aren’t about being effective at deporting undocumented people. It’s about intimidation. It’s sending a message that nowhere is safe and trying to discourage undocumented people from going to these resources.

Hey prof! Was Wurman a respected colleague when he told his 1L class that there was an invasion of migrants at the border? How about when he cheered on the criminalization of homeless people?
To those skeptical of or upset by Ilan's claim that an "entire literature" supports the birthright citizenship order, the best response is to substantively engage w/ the claim & assume llan's good faith..While some have done this, I’m dismayed by the many ad hominem attacks on a respected colleague.
I very much get where this is coming from, but I think we should resist this framing. As long as they're acting with integrity (which we should presume unless proven otherwise), academics need to be given the space to pursue their ideas in good faith, wherever they lead. 🧵
