Scientists are primed to see society's challenges as technical problems - if we can just get more information, we can fix it

But climate & nature are political problems not technical ones, and a technocentric mindset seems to hold scientists back from engaging politically or changing behaviour
🚨Techno-optimistic scientists take fewer climate actions

In a new preprint, @colognaviktoria.bsky.social, @maiensachis.bsky.social, @jmbh.bsky.social & I examine techno-optimism among 9,199 scientists and how it relates to their civic engagement and lifestyle choices🧵

The point of all these COPs is to stimulate action on climate change

Action on climate change means ending the burning of fossil fuels

Why give the biggest seat at the negotiating table to the people trying to stop the negotiations from being successful?

Pure insanity

This is, by some distance, the longest and most expensive legal letter we've ever sent. It involves a team of multiple KC and junior specialist environmental barristers. It's taken us 18 months to draft and has cost us a substantial six figure sum.

Wow.

The Greens are not just SECOND in this poll.

They're now 3 points ahead of Labour - who are fourth.

Time for Labour to stand down to stop splitting the anti-Reform vote!

In the 10 years since Paris, we failed to take the actions necessary to hold to 1.5C. We now face the same challenge in the next decade, but for 2C.

But now we also have to also contend with far worse #climate impacts as we try to decarbonise.

The longer we wait, the harder it gets!

"So within 5 years, I would say, we'd have wiped out the chance for 2C. Because if we say 1.5C is impossible now, effectively 2C in the early 2030s is in the same position" - @kevinclimate.bsky.social

This is just mad. The planet, our only planet is burning and people are sent to prison without the opportunity to explain why they 'offended'. Today is 16 degrees in the UK. WTF??!!!
Judges keep BANNING climate activists from talking about the climate crisis in their evidence in court...

Because they know that juries find them NOT GUILTY when they explain the JUSTIFICATION for their protests

I know how they got to that point.

Because we’re a few steps behind, living through the “getting to that point” right now in the UK.
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.

That the UK - one of the architects of this fund, designed to save the world’s forests - is now refusing to put any money into it is frankly shameful. Starmer’s claim that he still continues to back the fund is meaningless without resources - so much for climate leadership

Easily several hundred people have packed into this plaza in Chicago's North Center tonight in response to ICE abducting a daycare worker early this morning.

This is a neighborhood that has largely been spared until now from the "Midway Blitz" terror campaign. But everyone knows someone affected.

The saddest thing about this decade is realising how thick some of us are. Are we actually gullible enough to believe this?
Elon Musk, "These lovely small towns in England, Scotland and Ireland, they've been living their lives quietly. They're like hobbits"

"And so one day, 1,000 people show up in your village of 500 and start raping the kids"
