I am a very lazy person and being an "Alpha Male" is a lot of busywork on a checklist of things you can't do, and people you're obliged to hate, and even if I were so inclined, which I am not, thank you very much, I couldn't possibly be bothered
Refusing to follow their script / demonstrating the falseness of their grift isn't very Alpha Male of you, Scalzi.

When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

This! Ideas are easy. Execution of them is hard and messy.
Ideas are, no question, the cheap part. I have SPREADSHEETS of ideas, and if I keep up my current production rate, which is already unrealistically high, I will die before I finish using them all. EXECUTION is the important part.

America, you have spoken loud and clear: You do not like AI. But what if AI is the way to restart the world’s idea machine?

That feeling when a technology thing breaks in the house, and at first you worry that it's your fault, then discover it isn't your fault but you aren't sure why it happened?

Yeah, that feeling is very mixed

I got my new Kobo ereader and the first book I read was On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder. A fast but important read in these times. Here are a few highlights I made in the book: www.trickjarrett.com/2025-12-23.h...

These declines are MASSIVE.

And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING.

“Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?”

THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it.

Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

Incredible story. Garmin has a feature in some of their new glass cockpit systems that can detect if a pilot becomes unresponsive. This weekend it activated in a non-test scenario for the first time www.flightradar24.com/blog/aviatio...

I have been using my old Surface Duo 2 as my e-reader after I retired it as my daily phone and today I decided it was time to move on. I ordered a Kobo Libra Color to officially return to an e-ink e-reader. I couldn't bring myself to support Kindle.

Alright, I'm throwing in the towel on The Wager.

I wanted to love it, and I did for the first bit. But it's lost me and I'm only halfway through. Time to jump to something else.

This seems like a good time to tell everyone about how I met Bernice.

In college around 2003, I did morning classical radio for WREK once a week or so for a year or so. At WreK, on the soundboard, was a sticker label that said "Be nice to Bernice"

On the winter solstice, the Sun rises and shines down the length of the 5,100-year-old Newgrange passage tomb in County Meath, Ireland.

Remarkable designing and implementation by the Neolithic engineers who built it.

What a treasure.
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.
