You guys realize that taxing people to pay for services isn't socialism, right? This is just how governments work.

DO NOT call up the homeless shelter on thanksgiving or Xmas to see if you can pass a few plates and show your kids the “reason for the season”

The homeless shelter is not a petting zoo of human tragedy! The homeless shelter is not a drive thru nativity scene for you to enjoy!

This.
My daughter is 15, a child with a baby face whom I won’t even put in an Uber by herself. Just utterly disgusting from the same people who have spent years demonizing trans people as predators for daring even to exist. What are we even doing right now?

It's helpful to remember that they want to cut SNAP, not because it's wasteful and inefficient, but because they don't believe poor people should get any help from the government, only rich cronies.
Kind of wild that while food assistance was withheld from millions of families, one Trump-supporting billionaire (Ellison) saw his net worth grow more this year than the entire SNAP budget. And the YTD gains of the other four richest men would’ve fully covered salaries for all 2M federal employees.

The biggest problem in the Dem party are the people who attained positions of power and influence due to their connections to the Clintons, Obama, and Pelosi. This has allowed them to continually assert they know the secret to winning when all they do is accommodate and lose.

As soon as it was clear he might be taking over the site, I anonymized my account, and when he did take over, I nuked it.

I've yet to see any evidence this was a bad decision.

There are a bunch of people up at the top who have mistaken their insulation from the cruelties of life as a form of wisdom
seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

Regular reminder that Axios stories saying Dems are about to cave are likely sourced from GOP staffers trying to make it happen.
Doesn't mean it definitely won't happen. But it's like those NYT stories that Harvard is considering caving (they haven't). The anonymous source was trying to manifest it.

A cool thing about american politics is that if you describe in a matter of fact way what people believe the people with the most power in the media industry think that’s rude

Democrats have flipped 2 seats in the Mississippi senate, and in so doing they've broken the GOP's supermajority in the chamber.

‘If it was anybody else, we’d arrest him tomorrow,' Justice Department aide said of Trump

A handful of documents found by the FBI at Mar-a-Lago were so sensitive that even a senior Justice Department official didn’t have authorization to see them.

Looks like white U.S. citizens are the biggest group of SNAP recipients. People criticize SNAP without bothering to find out who uses it. “They should get a job.” It must be nice to have never been laid off, become ill, or get paid such low wages that you need help.

I’m heartened that so many citizens are attempting to draw attention to it, but the silence of former law enforcement officials in the face of nakedly authoritarian roundups makes me question a lot of my previous assumptions about old colleagues.

Zohran Mamdani is so scary because he is planting the idea that you can tax billionaires and use the money to help people instead of debating what services to cut to pay for tax cuts. Which is literally why the US government is currently shut down.

He is destroying decades of political messaging.

Great investigation of the Nazis, racists and criminals mobilising the flag-on-lamp-posts movement. This is the kind of journalism that the national media could and should have conducted:

So much this.
As far as I can tell, quite a lot what we inherit in the political science arena - including the structures of our democracy - is just dudes who felt they were experts sticking a finger in the air and going “yeah, I’m gonna say I’m right.”

It is the most "Let them eat cake" thing I've ever seen.
I am certainly no seasoned strategist but I am a little skeptical of the political wisdom behind building a giant golden ballroom and sharing a dozen photos of a renovated marble bathroom at the very moment that millions of people are losing access to healthcare and food.

hmm any measure of bots & bot generated posts as overall portion of the observed users or posts on each platform would be very useful
Is social media dying? How much has Twitter changed as it became X? Which party now dominates the conversation?

Using nationally representative ANES data from 2020 & 2024, I map how the U.S. social media landscape has transformed.

Here are the key take-aways 🧵

As I said many common many times over the past 25 years: the social media platform that grows, is the social media platform where young Black women feel safe to create.

Attempting to understand social media trends without understanding the lense of US racism deeply, leads to incomplete analysis.
