Excited to see this out in the world. The CGC is launching a curated strains collection, the first being protein degradation systems and this is a pilot primer to pair with it authored by myself, Dave Reiner, Ann Rougvie, and Aric Daul. We review the state of the field and provide use guidance (1)

🧵Good news out of #NIH today.
(1) NIH is extending #ESI and #K99/R00 eligibility to accommodate researchers whose eligibility would have ended during the previous shutdown. Take a look at NOT-OD-26-020. If your ESI status would have ended in 2025, you get an automatic extension through 2026/03/31.

@faseborg.bsky.social works hard to ensure a sustained commitment to investment in research. The FY26 budget is up for a full Senate vote, then next to the House. I know we're all tired, but contacting your reps still matters. Nothing happens without funding.
Thank the Senate for rejecting the drastic cuts to NSF and NIH! Recommended NSF receive $9 billion and NIH $48.7 billion to continue investment in research. Though these levels fall short of FASEB’s recommendations, their commitment to research is critical. Send a letter ➡️

"...science loses meaning if it comes at the cost of human potential, and mentorship is, at its core, about nurturing that potential."

Wise words from Brandon Gaut, whose essay is worth a read for mentors and mentees alike. We're so glad he is the recipient of our inaugural GSA Mentorship Award.
Wonderful (and humble) essay on mentorship by Brandon Gaut, on occasion of Brandon receiving the inaugural Mentorship Award of @genetics-gsa.bsky.social. I hope this will be widely read!

PA folks - This is Senator McCormick's first term. High stakes: University of Pittsburgh (at ~$685.3M ranked 6th in NIH funding) and Penn (at ~$691.2M ranked 5th in NIH funding) FY24. Plus Carnegie Mellon, Penn State, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, others.
From @aaas.org check-in with Sudip Parikh: a letter by 14 Republican senators urge the Office of Management and Budget to release NIH funding. If this includes your state (AL, ME, WV, SC, KY, KS, AR, PA, NC, IN, AK), Sudip recommends contacting & thanking them for being American science leaders.

What can you do? Amplify these stories & tell your own. As lawmakers head into discussions for the FY 2026 budget, your efforts are more important than ever.

The U.S. has long been a global leader in science, but that position is at risk. As research funding drops and political pressures rise, scientists, particularly in academia and research institutes, a...
