they understand insurance. the entire premise of libertarian opposition to mandatory insurance is that they should not have to care about anyone else and be permitted to take risks. it's the same opposition to vaccination and taxation.

they are bad neighbors.

Yep. Inflation was just cover for their decision because it was the most sanitary rationale they could think of.
I recall reading ages ago that some researchers studying the effect of automotive reviews on car purchases had made a surprising discovery: People most often pore over car magazines and reviews AFTER buying a car, rather than before.
I am so tired of hearing pundits - left, right, and center - ponderously announce that "what voters really care about is inflation and prices."

WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE

WHAT IS THE ACTUAL LINKAGE YOU SEE BETWEEN THESE THINGS AND ELECTION RESULTS

PLEASE, DO THE BARE MINIMUM AND SHOW A RELATIONSHIP

Vigorously tapping the sign: Americans are broadly conditioned to be consumers and not citizens.

If you ever wondered why scam texts, emails, or products of any kind persist, worry not because the NYT has dutifully provided the answer at various points since last November.
supreme court please stunt on these people and allow Trump to nuke their finances

We are a nation of consumers, not citizens. And he understands this.

People missing an important point about folks getting fired for whatever they said about Charlie Kirk: Americans are being conditioned to be snitches on their fellow citizens who don’t toe a party line on what is “allowed” to be expressed. And employers are going along. It’s the new secret police

Political violence disproportionately hurts people with less power, not people with more power. Political violence will disproportionately hurt people of color and women and LGBTQ people. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. Celebrating political violence means at best indifference to that.
Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

Unspoken end game here is to felonize and incarcerate as many people in “blue” states/cities as possible so they can’t vote.
INGRAHAM: People say you all are gonna roll through other cities -- 'Oh, martial law is gonna be declared.' And to that you say?

JD VANCE: How is it a power grab when we've already declined murders by 35% in nine days?

Anyone who experiences conflict with the public writ large or in any kind of toxic relationship learns eventually you cannot simply reason your way out.
The adamant elite refusal to call bullshit is a big part of How We Got Here.

The prevailing cultural attitude for years is you must not, under any circumstances, treat anything as bad faith. You are obligated to find some reasonable idea and engage with that, even if you distort to get there.

People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative.

A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same.

Mainstream Liberals don’t believe in persuasion and have been actively conceding the immigration, trans rights, and economy issue to the right for a while now. Trump’s reelection should have proven how easily malleable (for better or worse) the electorate is and it doesn’t even register.
the fundamental problem with these people (not jonathan) is that they don’t seem to believe in anything. if you’re willing to sacrifice one of the foundational rights of constitutional government on the altar of “buh this might not be popular” then what won’t you sacrifice?
If you think you can't make a political issue out of "people shouldn't be grabbed off the street and put in a foreign gulag forever," maybe consider getting out of politics/punditry. And these aren't technical slogans: they appear in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution (twice).

The most astonishing success with reactionary rhetoric was getting the discourse to transmute their moral, bucolic superiority complex onto the very vulnerable populations — poor, queer, and migrant — they target.
This from @jdcivicscience.bsky.social nails why small town, red America is not turning on Trump.

Cannot emphasize enough how important it is the multiple times Van Hollen publicly describes this as an abduction — not deportation.
Van Hollen: "This case is not only about one man, as important as that is. It is about protecting fundamental freedoms and the fundamental principle in the Constitution for due process that protects everyone who resides in America."

Again with the nostalgia. Only reason Carville stays relevant is due to the incessant reverence (and retconning) of the 90s Clinton era.
Back-to-back paragraphs: Democrats should "play dead" and get out of Trump's way, but also they should aggressively seize the public narrative.
