Washed up ex-politician with nerd tastes e.g. prog rock, ttrpgs, comic books and using archaic latinisms like "e.g." Wrote a book, Californio Lancers (University of Oklahoma Press, 2015), a while back. It got some recognition back in the day.

Tom's rules of politics, the latest in an occasional series: anyone who complains about political machines is probably trying to build one of their own.

In a time of increasing wildfire risk, the legislature's priority is to shield Arizona's wealthiest corporations from responsibility.

Opinion: Our homes are at risk, so why are lawmakers protecting corporations?
So why has the legislature made protecting multi-billion-dollar corporations from liability for wildfires a priority?

One of the buzzwords that I hate is "unintended consequences." If the opposition clearly states, on the record, in public, what will happen if a given course of action moves forward, and the powers-that-be go ahead with it anyway, then the consequences are clearly intended.

Folks this week have been making a lot out of the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's ride. This is actually incorrect. The anniversary of the release of Midnight Ride by Paul Revere and the Raiders actually does not come for another two weeks, May 6.

The Accountant 2, which continues the tale of a neurodivergent accountant who is also some kind of cold badass special forces type, premieres within 24 hours of RFK Jr.'s comments about autism. Who would have thought that a silly action movie was more reality-based than a speech by an HHS Secretary?

Celebrate International Women's Day by interrupting men with your unsolicited opinions and taking credit for their work. If they get upset about it, be sure to tell them that they sound hysterical and should smile more.

Just a reminder that there are still nationalist elements in Russia that call for the return of Alaska and former colonial outposts in California.

Rather than a long post detailing my experiences at the state capitol this week, I will leave it at this: for folks who claim that they have the people, the power of a righteous cause, and an ascendant movement on their side, they sure seem frightened, angry and miserable.

Prediction: Kid Rock and Lee Greenwood will be doing the halftime show next year. There will be a lot of flags, crosses and praise for the President, but it will totally not be political.

I guess the good news is that this all means Ted Nugent, the scribe of such life-affirming entries into the Great American Songbook as "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang," "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Jailbait," will finally get that long-deserved Kennedy Center Honor.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK #181: an analogy for the current moment. Canada is represented by Wolverine, feisty, resilient and punching above his weight. The US is represented not by the noble Captain America, but the Hulk, a dumb and impulsive brute who somehow forgot that Canada is a sovereign country.

I have said it for years, trans women would be welcomed as sisters of Themyscira.
I've always wanted to ask, Gail. Do you think trans women would be welcomed on Themyscira? I've often wondered and I can't think of anyone who's answer I'd trust more than yours.
