Washed up ex-politician with nerd tastes e.g. prog rock, ttrpgs, comic books and using archaic latinisms like "e.g." Wrote a book, Californio Lancers (University of Oklahoma Press, 2015), a while back. It got some recognition back in the day.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK #181: an analogy for the current moment. Canada is represented by Wolverine, feisty, resilient and punching above his weight. The US is represented not by the noble Captain America, but the Hulk, a dumb and impulsive brute who somehow forgot that Canada is a sovereign country.

This one is being heard in committee at the State House today. I am waiting for similar prohibitions on time travel, lycanthropy and turning lead into gold.

Admittedly, we have not given the executive order forbidding the CDC from talking about bird flu enough time to work. Pretending that the problem doesn't exist will eventually lower the price of eggs. Just wait, you'll see.

One interesting change that they made in the character is that Hawkeye's hearing loss is due to repeated head trauma from a lifetime of crime-fighting. In the comics, it was because he swallowed a sonic arrowhead to foil a mind-control device and save his girlfriend.

This is where we are: After 49 men were convicted in France for r*ping Gisèle Pelicot, the WSJ asks us to have some sympathy for the perpetrators, something that they rarely extend to other violent criminals. Maybe they are just being edgy and contrarian, you know, just asking questions.

Either someone named "A White" used to get mail at what is now my PO box, or Grease Monkey is another one of those corporations which is rejecting diversity in its marketing in a bid to show loyalty to the incoming administration.

(1/3) The headline gives the impression that this decision was made in the Albertson's C-suite. It wasn't. They got sued by the state and a judge ruled against them. You have to read the whole article to get to why AG Mayes took action and how this would have been a disaster for Arizona consumers.

(1/5) December 6, 1846: a force of American dragoons under General Stephen Watts Kearny, having been assured by Christopher "Kit" Carson that the Mexicans were poorly organized cowards and would not fight, arrogantly stumbled into a village that controlled a key pass into San Diego, Alta California.

All that US schoolkids learn about the War of 1812 is that we won one big battle which was ultimately irrelevant to the outcome. In Canada, they learn that we tried to invade and got our ass kicked.

I think that as Americans we fundamentally misunderstand Canada's sense of itself as a nation.
