Happy Heavenly Birthday to May Ayim! She would have turned 65 years old today. Although we are not kin, I feel kinship with her. Next August 2026 will mark 30 years since her passing.

After all these years of studying her, I still do not consider myself an expert on her.

so i talked to one of the bushes at the super bowl

What it was like to be a bush at Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance
The bushes on the field during the halftime show became a meme after the internet found out they were actually human performers.

And 3) fired or laid off the people who could speak to the event with breadth and depth.
It also points out how the cultural ignorance of much of our pundit & MSM class fails. 135 million Americans watched an important & controversial cultural event & many journalists are 1)ill-equipped to explain its significance or 2) too arrogant to know that would need assistance in unpacking it.
Bad Bunny’s performance began in the plantation, featured broken electric poles, and ended by centering a hemispheric understanding of “América”—among many other things—and some Anglo journalists are like “his performance wasn’t political.”

This is why we need to be telling our stories.

OPINION: "[Ida B. Wells'] articles about Black life and racism became popular, appearing in many of the 200 Black newspapers in the U.S. at the time. In 1889, she was invited to join the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight as a reporter and co-owner," Richard Campbell writes.

U.K. might lose a prime minister because a guy who worked for him knew another guy who hung out with Epstein. Meanwhile the U.S. opposition party is telling our President, who was Epstein's best friend, that his secret police should get better training so their public street murders look less messy.

I wrote this article last week and, luckily, it still holds after the Benito Bowl:

“I believe Bad Bunny’s performance will invite people to understand the beauty and complexity of our people’s history, even if it makes outsiders uncomfortable.”

Jorell is quite rightly being lauded for collaborating with Bad Bunny, and his PUERTO RICO, from @princetonupress.bsky.social, is fantastic, I keep thinking, as I've watched MPLS, of his earlier book THE LETTERED BARRIADA, about PR organizing and educating under occupation in the first half of C20.

100% this. This is a brilliant metaphor.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

I know I shouldn't swear, being a university professor blah blah blah, but fucking hell these concentration camps where kids are being tortured must be shut down now
“There were children in Dilley who were so distraught they cut themselves or talked about suicide…Moms told me that their kids had lost their appetites after finding worms and mold on their food”
NEW: ProPublica went inside the detention center for immigrant families in Dilley, Texas.

Children held there told us about the anguish of being ripped from their lives in the United States and the fear of what comes next.

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
