Ed Zitron is right. It'll take a while but the mass of layoffs amongst the tech giants is going to be their downfall in the end. You can't just automate away a need for human intellect in building tech that relies on meeting human needs. You need human involvement at all stages to define those needs

The beauty of computers is they they are an adjunct to your own brain. They extend your personal or industrial capability, and necessarily require your direct input to do it
They don't think for you, they *process* for you. No-one wants a replacement, they want an augmentation

For this reason, some of the most successful machines were designed to allow people to create their own machines for their own needs, to build little machines for businesses and organisations etc. But people *somewhere* having clear control over how the machines work was the bit that gave it value.
