Also to an extent I think there’s merit in reading “the classics” in your genre just like there’s merit to reading The Great Gatsby or whatever in high school even tho you hated it.
I wish the broader SFF community was more involved with academic work on SFF authors. I think there’s a difference between worshipping the canon and knowing where you came from.
