They want to raise wages, they really do. But do you know how inflationary that would be?

No, the good oligarch keeps wages low to protect the working classes from disaster.
Do you know how much CEO pay has skyrocketed since 1978?

100%? 500%?

Try 1,085%

Meanwhile, the $7.25/hr fed. minimum wage hasn't budged in 15 years and the tipped min. wage has been $2.13/hr since 1991.

This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.
CEO Pay Has Risen 1,085% Since 1978, But for Workers? Just 24% | Common Dreams
CEOs at top US companies saw their pay skyrocket by 1,085% since 1978, while typical worker pay only increased by 24%

"I tried to raise the minimum wage to $15/hr.

Not ONE Republican supported it.

A $7.25/hr minimum wage is an absolute disgrace. Americans should not be forced to work for starvation wages.

We must raise the wage to at least $17/hr."

I'd go for $25

In an annual NY ritual, over 1/8 of the bills that were laboriously pushed through the legislature were vetoed at the last minute by the governor. Among the vetoes were bills to remove felony disqualification for jurors, raise wages, protect endangered species, & expand eligibility for child care.
Hochul’s end-of-year vetoes and signatures
Just one bill remains for the governor to act on as 2024 comes to a close.

JMO, employers who pay so poorly their employees routinely depend on Medicaid, WIC, food stamps should face severe tax penalties to reimburse the tax payers. Then again we could just raise the minimum wage and index it to inflation. Or perhaps offer tax incentives to those paying reasonable wages.
70% of Americans who receive food stamps and Medicaid work full time, with Walmart one of the worst offenders as the country’s single largest employer.

Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to subsidize corporations who get away with paying poverty wages, especially not while raking in record profits.

Very interesting article and I admire Michael Pettis. I agree circumstances are different than in the 1930s and tariffs are more a tool than a universal evil.

But I don’t agree that the effects of tariffs in the US will be to raise wages even if production does increase.
I'm doubtful about this @michaelpettis.bsky.social argument because tariffs would strengthen the dollar, and the rates applied wouldn't overcome the expertise and infrastructure that China, the EU and other countries have developed in manufacturing. www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state...
