We are social animals. Not forgetting that is important.
turns out that parasocial relationships trump credentials every time, and we don't really have a good counter for it other than "hope we can get some people who are good at attracting a parasocial following who also know what they're talking about"

They have been working up to this since day one. This is their excuse for why they cover their faces, why following them and keeping track of license plates (which they illegally swap) is “doxxing” (it isn’t), why they have repeatedly arrested activists.

Fuck them.

Also why it is really annoying when people talk about the old days of conservative intellectuals. Watch that debate, then tell me you still think Buckley was an intellectual 🙄
An interesting aspect of this is that in the lead up to the debate Buckley himself was dismissive of Baldwin and other Black theorists and thinkers at the time. It’s why he looked the fool, he was sure Baldwin was simply a bitter guy with hate for white people.
One of the lasting impacts of William Buckley getting dog walked by James Baldwin in the Cambridge debate in 1965 was that racial conservatism decided it was easier to dismiss Black ideas because they couldn't win the argument.

This is unconscionable. America hates children.
I don't want to give this clicks, but there is a big push from the right to heighten policing and punishment in K-12 schools at the same time as they impose censorship and push RW indoctrination there and as they heighten surveillance and militarize local policing.

This is a nice thread and yes, agreed.
I am not a Christian of course but like all Americans I have spent my life marinating in Christian mythography, and so around this time of year I have a lot of thoughts about the Nativity and the part where the innkeeper says there's no room in the inn.

Dads taking their daughters’ feelings seriously. ❤️
In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

I had a boss who did something like this once. I was very direct with him in an open all company meeting about it and got scolded afterwards, but by then I already knew I was going to be quitting soon.
NYT shows how Bari Weiss really screwed this up.

She didn't attend any of the 5 screenings of the story, which began on Dec. 12.

She only first weighed in on Thursday, and the show incorporated her suggestions.

She then waited until weekend to ask for more edits.

I hope everyone gets some time off this week from work and, if necessary, exhausting relatives. And exhausting news. Bake yourself something yummy, take a free candy cane at the counter, watch the birds outside, pet a cat. ❤️🎄
