The 4th “Country Climate and Development Report” summary is out, covering 93 economies, with a focus on jobs.

This report is unique in that it is
based on dozens of individual-country reports, each prepared (and reviewed) individually.

The American neighborhoods with the highest risk of floods are losing residents

For the first time since 2019, high-risk counties lost domestic residents, with 30,000 more people relocating to other places in the country than moved in

The paper outlines future directions, in particular for quantifying the #economic #effectiveness of #climate #adaptation. Many thanks to the team: @ataberna.bsky.social , @chatzivasileiadis.bsky.social , @ignasicortes.bsky.social and the wider @sc3team.bsky.social

Here's the exciting part: our analysis reveals an #empirical signal that when the #private sector #invests in #climate #adaptation, #regional #economic #revenues grow (albeit inelastically). Building climate #resilience does not require sacrificing economic development.

Besides curious descriptive #statistics, we also present a #theoretical framework that connects #economic and #behavioral empirical research on #firms#climate #adaptation decisions.

A lack of #granular #economic #data obstructs understanding and facilitation of effective #climate action, especially with respect to #private #sector. We present a new dataset on #firms' investments in climate #adaptation, in five coastal regions in the Netherlands, China, Indonesia, and the USA.

Our work on #private sector #climate #adaptation investments is highlighted in a Research Briefing by @natclimate.nature.com! www.nature.com/articles/s41... It is an honor for me and the @erc.europa.eu SCALAR team. Here is the original research article: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Direct air capture (DAC) continues to be small, slow, and very expensive.

Not because it’s an early stage technology, but because it runs into fundamental thermodynamic challenges that money can’t solve.

This is exactly why it’s not recommended by Project Drawdown.

“Nature-related risks are already creating real and measurable financial impacts across sectors, geographies and time horizons."

Professor Nicola Ranger has written for Reuters on the increasing evidence that environmental degradation has financial consequences.
The burden of proof has flipped: why is nature not material to your business?
Earlier this year, the first wave of corporate reports under the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) quietly revealed a troubling trend. Fewer than 40% of companies identified nature-related issues – such as pollution, water scarcity and biodiversity loss – as material to their business. This isn’t just a bureaucratic oversight. It is a systemic risk hiding in plain sight.

The impact of climate chaos on the global economy is coming into focus. In this case data from the EU:

"Weather and climate-related extremes caused economic losses of assets estimated at EUR 738B between 1980-2023 in the EU, with over EUR 162B (22%) of those losses occurring between 2021 and 2023."
Increases in wildfires are expected to cause a notable increase in premature deaths, according to two studies in Nature.
