Meme thread. Daily? Who knows. We'll see if I even remember it exists.

1.

Today's theme: a little dirty but we're all adults here.
Mid-day update:

Meatspace is very cold, the snow is a problem on the stones, wind made my jaw scream with pain, and the cemetery was really pissed.

Lunch now I think.
Meatspace Day #2 plans have gone awry on account of "I'm not risking unfamiliar 10mph switchbacks in the mountains," yet we will persist.

I'm off to hang with the dead, y'all stop doomin' for a little bit, yeah?

"What's the point of standards" well it's so you don't end up with trash like Bari Weiss, for one thing.
“I’ve been hearing that standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She also asked openly, ‘What’s the point of standards?’” one CBS source said.

Bari Weiss wants to take down ‘too much power’ CBS News Standards unit: sources
EXCLUSIVE: Internal rumblings within the newsroom come after the S&P head resigned and the network disbanded its vaunted Race and Culture unit.

My take as well: We need everything from "social worker who can dodge a punch" to "SWAT team" because sometimes someone's having a psychotic break in public and sometimes someone has a gun and hostages. The police being our one-size-fits-all solution is pretty stupid in that light.

my controversial opinion that nobody likes is basically that we have no escalation ladder, both here and for incarceration. there are a lot of people who should not be, properly speaking, free, but unfortunately we have basically one level of restricted freedom and it's "torture pit"

Really wish I had gotten a better shot of this but holding a phone that says “who else was just ‘following orders’?” up to a riot cop is hard as hell

Literally nothing this week vis a vis Schumer and legislative strategy will change that we're just going to end up here again in Feb 2026, literally nothing is 'resolved'

Y’all, don’t be fucking dicks to staffers, it is neither nice nor particularly productive
You ever call a senator's office and ask the staffer who picks up what it's like to work for someone without a spine?

10/10 recommend.

Just in case someone doesn’t know this: one reason individual health insurance was so expensive before was that it’s generally a lot cheaper to insure groups. (Not just bulk discounts but the fact that you don’t need to do individual underwriting.) The ACA turned individuals into a big group.
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

As I’ve said over the last day or so, we need to remember that in 2017 the Repubs came one vote away from not only making prices exorbitant on the exchanges, they came one vote from wiping out the entire ACA. If McCain hadn’t hated Trump & McConnell the Repubs might have already killed the ACA

MSNBC last hour Tim Miller made I think a good case that Dems actually “won” the shutdown. Not sure I agree, I think they should have held out longer to increase the focus on the ACA exchange disasters. But I don’t disagree that it was nearly impossible for Dems to get Repubs to give in on subsidies

the first thing (well second) the GOP would pass in a post filibuster world rn is some of the craziest transphobic laws imaginable, a total nationwide ban on transitioning

so hard pass on the filibuster ending under a Republican Congress and Trump Presidency
The Democrats erred by not forcing Republicans to nuke the filibuster. But there was nothing Democrats could have done to get the ACA subsidies extended, because Republicans control all three branches and strongly believe that only rich people should have access to decent healthcare
You can criticize Senate Democrats for capitulating but Donald Trump and Republicans are the ones destroying the ACA.

The reason Democrats can't do anything more than sometimes stall the Republicans before they destroy something is because not enough Democrats were elected to stop them, so embracing a "primary and replace every Dem" strategy which will prob lead to even fewer Dems in Congress seems less than ideal

This is what everyone said the Democrats would do on Day 1 of the Shutdown. Hell, most people predicted Democrats would do this on every day leading up to the shutdown.

It's day 40.

Republicans got flattened in the off-year elections and Trump begged the Supreme Court to let him starve children.

We went from "I bet Schumer can't lift this truck" to "I bet Schumer can't lift it over his head" to "I bet he can't hold it there for 20 minutes" to "He's so weak he could only hold the truck over his head for 2 hours."

You buy your own car insurance, right?

How many of y'all have had super great "negotiations" with your car insurance provider?
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

Hmmm. There's "are you ready" again.

I don't have a handle on where that's coming from yet.
INGRAHAM: Is affordability a voter perception issue of the economy, or is there more that needs to be done by Republicans?

TRUMP: More than anything else, it's a con job by the Democrats. Are you ready? Costs are way down.
