Ah yes, this is the future of media. Something I've spent my entire life working in on the business side.

So proud.

I mean, really. No editorial standards, no financial standards. This is what happens when contrarian shitposters take over.

Yay us!
“I’ve been hearing that standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She also asked openly, ‘What’s the point of standards?’” one CBS source said.

I've worked adjacent to the bookstore biz for years and have a particular interest in #indie #bookstores. You'd think this would be obvious, but apparently it isn't

FYI: Binc is one of the few charities I trust implicitly.
did you know that most independent booksellers do not get healthcare through their jobs and navigate insurance markets on their own? do you know most independent booksellers don't make a lot of money?

anyway for no particular reason here's a reminder to donate to BINC: bincfoundation.org

Far too many.
there are a lot of people with loud voices who are pretty insulated
seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

Old me going back in time to tell young 27 yr old me:

"You know, you really don't want to go to work for Condé Nast anyway. Don't sweat it. They're not what they appear to be."

I see all that money spent in the buyout was well spent... /s
There is some sad irony in McClatchy shutting its DC bureau the same day that Dick Cheney died.

That bureau (then Knight-Ridder) did some of the best, most skeptical reporting anywhere in the run-up to the Iraq War. And they took a lot of shit for it at the time.

So this is one of those moments where I would very much like to go back in time and tell 20something me "Hey, so you didn't get to work for Condé Nast, this is a good thing! Really, it's a good thing! Stay indie!"

20something me was so messed up.

This demand that you MUST listen to people who disagree with you, who will make you angry—directed exclusively at liberal-leaning people who feel barraged by right wing garbage filling up the major platforms—is such a tell about what these people think social media is for and what their place is.

a brilliant piece (per usual) from @profgalloway.com

The question I always com back to is: If no one has a job, and the a**holes in charge won't offer UBI, who the hell is going to be able to buy anything from these a**holes?

Yes, we've seen this before: The Silent Gen hated on the latter Boomers (Gen Jones), Boomers hated on GenX culture and criticized Millennials, and now Millennials write this crap about Gen Z...

This is the most boring "journalism" that we have endured forever.
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”

And I also really hope that @katmabu.bsky.social is representing Chicago in 2027.

Chill out and think about how 65 yr old you will feel if you spend your entire working career obsessed with your career.

Update your skills, don't dedicate your life to one path, have lots of other things outside of work to do.

But chill.
