What works? Ad campaigns that get earned media (e.g. someone writes/blogs/streams about it), ads to qualified audiences (dashboard ads on your console), targeted ads (display ads, retargeted ads, etc). All of that is hyper unsexy for the old school marketers.

Damion's thread is good both up and down, but I wanted to make a slightly digressive point, and I'm quote tweeting it outside of his thread because it's about a real but non-rational reason people buy these ads, and I don't want to take away from Damion's main point that these ads are non-crazy buys
And most of that spend is not very effective, which is to say if you buy advertising during an NFL game, what % of that audience wants to play that game? By contrast, the Game Awards draws a large audience of people who want to buy the latest hot shit games.
