Extremely good piece.

My Uber Driver ratings say I’m a “great conversationalist” but it’s literally only because there’s a 50% chance any given middle-aged guy in my car is a Stephen King fan and I just ask them to share their thoughts on The Dark Tower series for the length of the ride.

As ever, @polgreen.bsky.social gets the moral balance precisely right; while this is an op-ed, it contains real reporting that punctures some of the reactionary mythologising about these protests.

Her final words are haunting.

There might be problems in the student protest movement for Gaza, but they are not misguided in their goals.

“The Music Man”, my favorite musical about a grifter capitalizing on a moral “not our kids!” crisis that he himself fabricated. You can mad libs “Ya Got Trouble” with any social panic.
It’s definitely an accelerating trend! It sucks for the performers, as I can attest. A parent complained about our production of Merrily We Roll Along during my senior year of high school, so we had to scramble for a new, less controversial musical, The Music Man.

They had Judith Butler on this week’s “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” and quizzed them on horror movies. They got a perfect 3/3.

Read Dorley Hall. I was surprised by how much I related to it as a trans man. I don’t want to co opt the narrative, because I know it’s INTRINSICALLY tied to trans fem experiences, but it was so powerful for me as someone whose learned gender roles became poisonous, and how transition saved me.
