I think the Hecate clone is actually the new year, here. Country Boy is having a flashback to when he raised a previous new year, and the arc (as much of a continued thought as Tats can muster) is that Country Boy gets a second chance to raise a kid “right”, but one that won’t turbo-age.

- Baba making that appeal for nonviolence at the end was infuriating and insulting - which is, of course, the point. It was a powerful thing to see the hypocrisy of institutionally-enforced “pacifism” laid out clear. Really well done.

- I’m so glad I saw Monkey Man in theaters. The violence was so unsettling at times that I think had I been at home, I’d have paused the movie or distracted myself and never come back to it. Being in the theater kept me present and locked in and I ultimately really enjoyed it.

- The COLORS! The lighting was so rich and saturated. The poster shot of Kid in the red elevator was peak.

- Alpha and the other hijra were amazing. My favorite scene was the drum/training montage bit. It was joyful and heartfelt and joined the front and back halves of the film really beautifully.

- The movie’s narration of the Ramayana doesn’t go as far as to talk about Hanuman’s greater service to God through his role, but instead mirrors the epic through the support of Alpha when she tells Kid to remember who he is - affirming his role and purpose.

- The bits of the Ramayana epic were great, and I especially liked how they continued to tell the story through Kid’s character without the explicit overlay. (The message of the Ramayana is, essentially, when Hanuman forgets himself, he serves God; when he remembers himself, he is God.)

- LOVED the minimal dialogue. Great symbol language. Nothing was over-explained or spoon-fed. Writing assumed audience was capable of following along.
