This is my shocked face: 😐

Look, I love science fiction & desperately want many of its concepts & ideas to be real (but, y'know, w/ the sociotechnical concerns attended to because I Actually love sci-fi). But some people want sci-fi to be real so bad that they ignore obviously over-hyped bullshit
Tesla Robotaxis Reportedly Crashing at a Rate That’s 4x Higher Than Humans

The incidents bring the robotaxi service to a total of 14 crashes since launching last summer.

The new data raises concerns about how safe Tesla’s systems really are compared to the average driver.

Ho-lee Shit. This is phenomenally good news. Department of Education rolls back— for now— its attempts to destroy Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility initiatives. Keep an eye on them, of course, and watch for the hidden knife, always, but for now: Fantastic news.
BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.

This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.

This is horrible for riders, railroad engineers, residents along the route, Connecticut taxpayers, and the environment. Absolutely insane for us to even get to this point
According to Trains Magazine, Connecticut could remove M8 EMUs from Shore Line East *solely* because of the additional fees Amtrak charges for using electricity on the NEC.

I say this, every time i say it (which is far too fucking often), to myself as much as anyone else.

Like Kaba says, hope is a discipline, a practice. That doesn't mean "don't be sad," but rather using what you can to turn sadness, anger, frustration, even despair into something that drives change.
Please listen to me very carefully right now: Learn to take and celebrate small short wins, to build momentum and morale, or you and everyone you need to fight beside you will be burned out, demoralized, and demotivated before the next big opportunity comes along.

And fellas, feel free to deploy any of these when we hear creepiness directed at someone else.

I firmly believe that half of where we are with people saying quiet parts out loud is because people were met with awkward silence instead of polite but firm accountability and felt emboldened.
Due to recent discussions: when I worked at a library, I was trained on how to politely but directly respond to unwanted sexual comments. Unfortunately commonly-marketed fantasies about librarians mean it happens a lot.

Rehearse these. Be comfortable saying them forcefully, but politely.

And every time libraries "step in" to do things, it's added load to library workers who too often are seen as "no one."
I wish more people were aware of just how many things their public libraries “step in” to do, how many gaps they fill silently.

NYC, as budget season commences, we need to end the annual budget dance — a gratuitous, insulting ritual — and ensure consistent, generous funding for our libraries.
“In 2019, as [Gannett] began fully moving operations out of the bldg, the entire collection—by then scattered across the basement—was suddenly in limbo… The Poughkeepsie Public Library stepped in, agreed to pay rent on a dedicated storage unit + took on physical custodianship of the archive…”
