I'm going to take some time to decide what to do next.
An email from me to Richard Carlbom: "Richard, I am extremely disappointed in this response. Last week's Feminist Caucus meeting was a clear display of the transphobia running rampant in certain corners of the DFL. We brought it to your attention hoping you would condemn it, hoping you would say that this behavior is not welcome in our party. You have refused to do so. We hoped you would take decisive action to immediately ensure that DFL events, meetings, and other spaces are safe for trans people. We hoped you would use your position to make clear to everyone that as Chair, you will not stand for transphobia in these spaces. You have refused to do so. When we met with you on Monday, your first ideas for what to do about this were to have a listening session for trans folks in the party, to have a DFL T-shirt designed by a trans person, and to involve trans people in Rep. Sarah McBride's upcoming visit. You had no suggested actions that would root out the transphobia in the party - only ones that would amplify the visibility of trans people. While amplifying trans voices is important, It means nothing if it's done in transphobic spaces. You have done nothing to stop DFL spaces from becoming transphobic spaces." It's no wonder so few trans people are active in party leadership, despite the fact that Minnesota has the highest concentration of trans adults. It's no wonder so many of my trans friends have become disillusioned with politics and with the DFL. So many trans people have lost our faith in the DFL, and for good reason. The fact that you have refused to take this opportunity to repair that trust speaks volumes. I still have respect for you and hope for the party, but this is an insufficient way to meet the moment. When trans people are under attack from the Republicans, from the federal government, and from some Democrats, the DFL should consider fighting transphobia to be its duty and its honor. The fact that you instead just regurgitate these non-committal, mealy-mouthed statements that are ostensibly in support of trans people but have no action attached to them? That's incredibly disappointing. I will be taking the next few days to decide my next steps with the party, including whether to step away entirely. To clarify: while we have not yet been approached by the state party to collaboratively address transphobia within the DFL, this is the first time in many years that a DFL Chair has publicly said they are willing to work with Stonewall.

Richard sent us an email at the last possible moment and also replied to the letter...with the exact same email. It's a literal copy and paste, except the opening paragraph changed slightly. You can even tell from the formatting.
Dex and Luna, Thank you for reaching out and meeting with us regarding the need to ensure all spaces are trans-, nonbinary-, and LGBTQIA2S+-inclusive. I am an ally in this critical work. Ensuring that everyone can show up as their full selves and safely participate, share their perspective, and advocate for their favorite policy or candidate is essential to our success building the broadest coalition possible. Each member of our community has a responsibility to engage in alignment with our DFL values by treating others with respect and dignity, and to honor how they wish to be addressed. This is the standard expected in all party spaces. When the party falls short, we also have a responsibility to listen and improve. You have my commitment to that work. I am writing to share with you work that is already underway and work that, while planned for, will be accelerated based on your feedback and the experiences you have described. This work includes ensuring that our accessibility committee establishes clear guidelines for how events, meetings, and conventions properly accommodate participants from the trans, non-binary, and LGBTQIA2S+ communities; robust training for staff and volunteer leaders conducted by trusted community organizations; collaborative and regular meetings between Minnesota DFL Party Officers and leaders from the trans, non-binary, and LGBTQIA2S+ communities; and regular engagement with Minnesota DFL staff to advise how we can best conduct constituency outreach with the trans, non-binary, and LGBTQIA2S+ communities. We look forward to expanding on the work we are already doing with Stonewall DFL and with community members with lived experience ensuring that our work remains accountable and effective. I plan to update you on our progress and invite you to meet and discuss our approach to each. The DFL has well-established internal processes to address complaints regarding conduct and challenges to party procedures. These will be used to review and respond to points two and three of the requested actions in the public letter, and I am committed to ensuring these processes operate in good faith. Thank you again for your time. I look forward to continuing this crucial conversation and will be in touch soon with next steps. Richard

My statement on tonight's DFL Feminist Caucus Annual Meeting. This statement is being emailed to the Feminist Caucus Chair, Alicia Gibson, and to the State DFL Chair, Richard Carlbom.

This caucus should be ashamed of itself.
Tonight, I attended my first and last DFL Feminist Caucus meeting. As someone who did not come by my feminism through how I was raised, but rather fought my way through to live as the gender I am and to exist as a non-binary person in this world, I found the experience to be demeaning, demoralizing, and actively anti-feminist. If being a feminist in the DFL means caucusing with this group, count me out. My pronouns are very simple and yet the caucus chairs and caucus leadership could not get them correct, despite being repeatedly reminded and corrected at every single opportunity. However, they could suddenly use the singular “they” when it came to my fellow caucus member who happened to be a trans woman, despite her repeatedly giving her pronouns as she/her. This was just the beginning. It was clear from the start that no one leading this meeting understood Robert’s Rules, and very clearly wanted to vote for their friends and be done with it. At the very beginning, an illegal motion was made to just adopt an entire slate of leadership, despite there being challengers to those positions known to the caucus. For me, however, the most hurtful thing was that despite repeatedly affirming that underrepresented people should run for caucus office, should be prioritized in the process, no trans or non-binary people were represented in any of the caucus leadership, much less respected in the meeting. My pronouns - they/them - were clearly seen as an inconvenience, met with eyerolls and annoyance whenever I corrected people. At one point, one of the newly elected caucus leadership claimed her pronouns are “Black Queen,” a clear mockery of the process of asking for pronouns altogether. Does this reflect DFL values? To mock a non-binary person whose community is under direct attack from the president himself? To refuse to use a person’s proper pronouns so repeatedly and without care that I had to make a SIGN with them on it for the meeting? It wasn’t as though my pronouns were a surprise. I sent in my statement of intent to run for Vice Chair the day before the meeting and it was sent out to all members. I identified my pronouns in that statement. And yet, they were ignored. The DFL Feminist Caucus is anything but. I resign my membership.

We have worked hard to build a trans-inclusive Minnesota. Our community growing deep roots here. To see our community dismissed and disregarded in this way is unacceptable.

Completely and totally unacceptable behavior from leadership of a recently chartered DFL Community Caucus. Transphobia anywhere is a threat to our community everywhere.

This is only the most recent example of transphobia being tolerated within the party. When will @dfl.org step in to stop this?

To be clear: this just gives me further motivation to push for a rule that positions transphobia - including misgendering like this - as an offense that's the same as physical violence.

Happy Labor Day!

The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota has the distinct honor of being the only Democratic Party affiliate in the United States that explicitly names Labor as part of our coalition. While this is unique, the DFL must remember not to take it for granted.
