A factor the author unfortunately forgets though naming the panopticon, that is key in Foucault’s analysis of Bentham’s panopticon and in its practice, is not the surveillance for (re)action, but the disciplining effect of the permanent threat of surveillance - panoptic anxiety. #ring #usa
“No matter how Ring and other surveillance tech companies may downplay it, there’s no world in which finding lost dogs is the final end-use for this technology.”
Opinion | Ring is using lost dogs to make the surveillance state adorable
The same technology the Amazon-owned company uses to find lost dogs could easily be turned against their owners.

Digital asbestos.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

The showed us cute missing dogs & we consented to turning our doorbell cameras into a mass human tracking system.

Mark my words, Ring's Search Party will become the next Flock.

Only instead of just being sketchy cameras installed in parking lots, it will be everywhere. That's their play.

The Super Bowl halftime show featured a little boy & social media users speculated that the child was 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos. But it wasn't. Liam is in hiding w/his family. "He’s not the same boy. He can’t sleep well at night. He wakes up three or four times a night screaming, ‘Daddy, Daddy.’”
‘He’s not the same’: Father of Liam Conejo Ramos says 5-year-old continues to suffer
Some people thought they say the 5-year-old during the Super Bowl halftime show. But Liam is still in hiding with his family, after he and his father were detained and then released from a Texas deten...

What does it mean to be hot for revolution—to feel a desire to transform the world in your belly and your bones?

Here's my latest, on how erotic desire feeds political agency. I draw on AIDS activism, disability justice & other movements against sexual oppression.

“I heard similar observations from 20 film-studies professors around the country. They told me that over the past decade, and particularly since the pandemic, students have struggled to pay attention to feature-length films.”

Reminder that "jaywalking" was literally made up by american car manufacturers to shift the blame for accidents from drivers to pedestrians. "Jay" was a slang term meaning "idiot" or "rube".
“Jaywalking is permitted in London. In 1966, the police tried to crack down on it, but gave up after three months.”

People walk and cycle on roads by right, people drive under licence.

Jaywalking is not a thing in English law and Waymo must not change that.

Self-driving taxis are coming to London – should we be worried? | Jack Stilgoe
Waymo’s cars were first rolled out in San Francisco, but the English capital’s old roads, pelican crossings and jaywalkers may pose issues for AI, says science and technology professor Jack Stilgoe

Data protection, as a concept, grew out of post-war legal scholarship in Germany which reflected on the use of data about people by the Nazi Govt, and formulated a set of limits on data use which recognised that to collect and use data about people was to impact the people’s lives.
If anyone doubts how prescient and important the German Constitutional Court‘s 1983 decision on self-determination regarding information was - the US offers a powerful example of how things can go wrong
A manual for ICE's immigrant-targeting computer system, Palantir ELITE, was leaked today.

Let's look at it, then step back to evaluate how far we've come along a dangerous road and where that road might take us. 🧵

Does Foucault say anything about what it does to you when your co-author starts working through your comments on their part of a Google doc while you’re still in the process of reading and commenting?

I am so tired of all the things that we said would happen, and were routinely ignored or dismissed by tech bros and neoliberals for saying would happen, continuing to happen, in exactly the way that we said they would happen.
Seems like one of those issues that should greatly concern everyone regardless of their politics.
