I just hope everyone who likes to mention that they'd love to learn Irish and asking Irish speakers to help them and not leave them out are also talking about investment in the Gaeltacht when politicians come canvassing. I hope they're asking for new local Gaelscoileanna and more GA career paths

This is the abstract of "Evolutionary Psychology and the Crisis of Empirical Rigor in Feminist Studies," from the forthcoming November 2025 issue of SEXUALITY & CULTURE.

This paper critiques core tenets of feminist studies through the lens of evolutionary psychology, arguing that many claims – such as those concerning patriarchy, social constructionism, fat studies, rape, ecofeminism, and lived experience – lack empirical support and are shaped more by ideology than science. It begins by reassessing the feminist concept of patriarchy, traditionally seen as a deliberate male power structure, and instead proposes it as an emergent outcome of evolutionary pressures around reproduction and resource allocation. The paper then critiques fat studies, which often dismiss biological and medical consensus on obesity in favor of social constructionist views. Drawing on evolutionary psychology, the analysis highlights that human preferences for certain body types are not arbitrary but reflect adaptive traits related to health and fertility. Feminist theories of rape are also examined, particularly the view that rape is solely about power and not sexual motivation. The paper presents an evolutionary perspective that considers rape a maladaptive reproductive strategy, arguing that ignoring sexual motivation oversimplifies a complex issue and limits explanatory accuracy. Overall, the paper contends that feminist studies have increasingly prioritized ideological narratives over empirical inquiry, influenced by Marxist and postmodernist critiques. The article concludes that, rather than serving as a neutral academic discipline, feminist studies now functions predominantly as an advocacy platform – one better suited to political settings – while empirical inquiry into gendered behavior should be pursued within disciplines adhering to stricter methodological standards.

my controversial opinion is that i do actually think it's fine for us to at least talk about updating the process by which candidates get on the presidential ballot. my less controversial opinion is that i do not trust FF/FG to be anywhere near that conversation.

I'm not sure that we should be entrusting any future presidential election legislation changes to 2 parties who both ran their presidential election campaigns so badly that 1 lost their candidate and their deposit and the other lost by a historic margin and the candidate is being sued for defamation

J.M. Kelly, original author of the keading Irish constitutional law textbook and later Fine Gael Minister and Attorney General, advocating an active presidency in 1966.
Over the last few days the Taoiseach and one of his Ministers have made speeches showing that theh think the President as a mere symbol : indeed the Minister said that the Constitution plainly prevented him from being anything more. The Constitution says no such thing; on thr contrary Article 12.8 obliges the President to swear , on taking up his office "that I will dedicate my abilities to the service and welfare of the people of Ireland." I think it would be intolerable if a President were, for example, to behave with open hostility towards a Government, but I do not accept that (apart from the special Presidential Message to the Nation: Article 13.7) his right of free speech should be thought more limited than that of any other citizen and, as I have already written to yoy, he should feel free to take constructive initiatives of his own jn the interest of the nation ans society. The President should be an office for an activebrave and imaginative man, npt a socket fpr a totem pole.

Looking like a resounding victory for Catherine Connolly.

A huge moment for the united left in Ireland, for the many young people whose energy and optimism fuelled Connolly’s campaign, and a pretty clear rejection of uninspiring government party candidates who couldn’t offer a vision.
