a committee in the EU parliament is today voting on some new rules on housing for the EU, and looks in danger of steering it in favour of developers instead of people who need a home

no universal right to housing, no focus on social housing, no standards to make houses cheaper to heat and cool
Wrote about how more families present to emergency accommodation in the Dublin region due to notices of termination over any other single reason for their homelessness.

Evictions are the issue, and building public housing at scale is the solution.
Una Mullally: Evictions have now reached a similar level to the 1850s
Child homelessness is the most devastating aspect of this crisis

cefic is one of the biggest lobby groups in brussels, working for fossil companies to make sure we still use oil and gas even if we stop burning it for energy

petrochemicals – plastics, fertilisers – are the escape hatch of the oil and gas industry

these lobbyists make sure the EU supports them

"Reporter: Do any of you have a favorite animal?

Child: My favorite one is a gold snake that can move. It has gold eyes, and it has a super-duper tail…

Reporter: Mr. Mamdani, the second question for you.

Mamdani: Yes. It’s also the golden snake."

The government is gonna look themselves in the mirror, take a deep breath and tell themselves 'we gotta get more racist'
New polling on Ireland's housing crisis:

- 81% want the government to build more social housing "even if there are local objections"

- 64% disagree government is making progress on housing

- 67% would vote for a constitutional right to housing

- 29% are personally affected by the housing crisis
Appetite for radical change grows as voters’ patience wears thin over housing crisis
Half of all voters say country’s problems are getting worse instead of better

irish government to require all pedestrians and cyclists to dress like this so that drivers will maybe look at them
February 5, 2026 at 9:25 AM
what drivers see when you're wearing hi-viz vs when you're not
February 5, 2026 at 9:12 AM
i find that the blind spot tends to be in between the driver's seat and the steering wheel
I was wearing helmet and hiviz when another parent at son's school slammed open his van door while I passed and knocked me into traffic. Said that the van had been made with a "blind spot".
I was wearing hi vis when a motorist drove into me. Passengers in the car got out to tell me the driver was really upset because she didn't see me. I didn't have much sympathy as I was picking gravel out of my hands.

I was visible. She didn't look.

What a wildly stupid idea.

Mandatory helmets and high viz is a proven remedy to reduce the number of people cycling. It effectively kills off things like Dublin Bikes.

That's why no other EU country does anything like this. Pure madness.

On one hand, I truly loathe the two-wheeler-isation of pedestrian space (slimy silicon valley e-scooter rental companies, fatbikes etc), but on the other hand, this absolutely rocks

Now that the council has stopped taking horse manure, it's piling up in the Liberties, councillors say. “So the council is allowing horses in Dublin City,” says horse owner David Mulraney. “But they’re not allowing them to put their horse manure anywhere.”
