When covering No Kings last year, I immediately honed in on events in Historic Filipinotown. I talked to so many people of different ages who have been organizing through much worse times, like martial law in the Philippines, and how that is motivating their fight for democracy today.

With the next No Kings announced, here's a snapshot of organizing in LA. I talked with a Desert Storm vet nurse, a caregiving activist disappeared by the Marcos regime, and a union organizer about the Filipino-American legacy of resistance. 19thnews.org/2026/02/fili...

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

Star realized something important a few months ago: She didn’t want to waste time pretending to be someone else.

So at 36, she sought out gender-affirming care.

But since she's on Medicaid, she can't go to the one place near her Ohio town where she feels safe at the doctor: Planned Parenthood
After years of waiting, she wanted to start gender-affirming care. Politics interfered.
Medicaid patients can’t use their insurance at Planned Parenthood, unless their state covers it. This is a major setback for trans health care.

Puerto Rico hasn't had reliable power in a decade.

The grid sends occasional surges through the wires that fry appliances.

Electricity rates are among the highest in the entire U.S.

Heat waves are getting intense in the summer, and outages mean A/C is no guarantee for an aging population.

Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

My takeaways from Bad Bunny nobody asked for

1. the inclusion of afro-Latinidad
2. the use of kids AS kids. they weren't doing much but vibing (said positively).
3. I think there are a lot of easter eggs that require repeat viewing
4. everyone looked like they were having so much fun
