Rather than going IDE, I decided to be a little different and go with SCSI. I just ordered a BlueSCSI from @museumjoe.bsky.social for the IBM PS/2 30/286. I picked up a nice auto booting 16-bit ISA Adaptec SCSI card for cheap on eBay. The existing hard drive still works but who knows for how long.

PSA: Check your expansion cards and keep them like you keep 3D filaments. Even tantalum capacitors fail when they age/are exposed to moisture.
