Our grasp on reality is slipping. The response rate to the survey behind the unemployment rate (and the rest of the household survey) is now lower than during the pandemic.

The decline in response rates during the first year of the Trump Admin 2.0 was larger than at any time outside the pandemic.

I would not have guessed that FRED/BLS would have these data so clearly classified, but wow look at that difference! And pork chops long ago used to be over twice as expensive. As someone who hasn't bought either of these things in a long time, I had no idea prices were like this now.

In 1854, after watching the federal government deploy 2000 federal troops and spend $40,000 sending Anthony Burns back into slavery, Boston's Amos Adams Lawrence said “we went to bed one night old-fashioned, conservative, Compromise Union Whigs and waked up stark mad Abolitionists.”
Yesterday morning kids were sent running from their bus stop in panic because ICE showed up. This guy at today’s ICE Out of Lindenwold protest is a must watch 😭. @maddow.bsky.social

Expenditure shares can be used to measure aggregate inflation while correcting for quality change, new varieties, and misweighting. Applied to BEA data, inflation is understated, from David Argente, Chang-Tai Hsieh, and Munseob Lee www.nber.org/papers/w34803

A Dem centering a midterm campaign on a poor macroeconomy is going to backfire if tariffs get further watered down and the Fed successfully threads the needle on inflation and unemployment in spite of everything Trump is doing to try to blow that up
NEW: US CPI inflation fell to 2.4% year-on-year, increasing 0.2% month-on-month in data released this morning

Core CPI inflation fell to 2.5% year-on-year, increasing 0.3% month-on-month

I will joke about her because she is ridiculously unprofessional and if she fears no consequences because she thinks her power is secure that is also very funny, as it is not. No one should be afraid of Pam Bondi, who will be known to history as the loser who couldn’t get a single grand jury vote.
You can joke about Pam Bondi’s ridiculous unprofessionalism all you want, but I’m deeply shocked by it: She acts as if she fears absolutely no consequences, convinced that there will be no more political power transfers. — This should shake everyone to their core.

A simple way to think about this is, does your job involve generating words in a pattern? The computer can do that, and it will only get better at doing it as time goes on.

Most people's job is not *just* to generate words in a pattern. It's the nature of jobs that will change, not their existence.
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

Invoking wealthy class solidarity to excuse sex crimes against children is sorta the Epstein Class in a nutshell
Bondi crashes out over Epstein: "The Dow is over 50,000 dollars! I don't know why you're laughing. You're a great stock trader as I hear, Raskin. The Dow is over 50,000 right now. The S&P at almost 7,000, and the Nasdaq smashing records. That's what we should be talking about."

If there's anything that actually unites Millennials as a subculture, it's scars from witnessing 9/11 followed by watching adults losing their goddamn minds over Janet Jackson in the Super Bowl
Alford: "On Bad Bunny - we're still investigating. There's info out about the lyrics. I don't speak fluent Spanish, but if it's true what was said on natl TV, we have a lot of Qs for entities that broadcast it & we'll be talking w/ the FCC. This could be worse than the Janet wardrobe malfunction"

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Political divisions increasingly driven by whether one understands that a Puerto Rican is a US citizen.
The Super Bowl halftime show, with Bad Bunny showcasing Latin music before a global television audience expected to top 100 million, will illustrate the nation’s immigration divide whether or not the reggaeton star delivers an explicit political message.
The enthusiasm — and scorn — surrounding Bad Bunny’s star turn at the Super Bowl
The halftime show will illustrate the nation’s immigration divide whether or not the reggaeton star makes an explicit message about Trump’s deportation drive.

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

Important time to actually go into the linked sources on this. The CNN article doesn't say that the "unnamed" investor actually redeemed the shares. The source for the 10% ownership stake is a NYT article from July 2007 that implies Epstein was still invested in the fund.

Was driving my kids to school and the first thing on the radio was reporting about Trump's video depicting the Obamas as apes and I think many people still don't fully appreciate what it means to have to raise Black children in a country where the president is so brazenly and consistently racist
