I've got a piece up today on social policy at the very cool indie mag Kill Your Darlings. I take a look at the recent work of Thomas Piketty, and ask whether Saturday's election result might give the Albanese governemnt more ambition to tackle inequality www.killyourdarlings.com.au/article/futu...

Will Albanese’s election victory mean Labor will finally address wealth inequality?

Woke up to see Americans learning that there's no domestic tea industry. (No shade, I personally am concerned about my emotional support imported American cherries.)

I've long dreamt of writing a review article for the field of Chinese Australian history. I wanted to trace where it fit (or didn't) within Australian national mythologies & see what happens when we view Australia through Chinese sources. Here it is:

So anyway as a filthy bisexual on the apps can I tell you I absolutely stand by this assumption. If a bloke lists himself as "not political", chuck a uey immediately
Lemme just say, if you are dating a dude in 2025 (this was actually 2024) and he tells you he doesn't follow politics or doesn't have opinions, HE'S CONSERVATIVE and either afraid to be judged or not willing to talk. Period. At the very least, he doesn't have gay friends he cares about.

HAPPY NEW BOOK DAY to @fionathehardy.bsky.social for her exquisite new piece of Melbourne-based Yeah Noir fiction, UNBURY THE DEAD. I loved being asked to advise on this book, I can't wait for you all to read it and I hope it gets a sequel. Buy it from your local bookstore THIS WEEK.

Text Publishing has announced it is selling to Penguin Random House. Text is of Australia’s most storied and influential indie book publishers, and the acquisition is the latest in a series of M&A’s of Australian publishers by global multinationals. A sad day, in my opinion

This is correct
Ironically, most penguins aren't aware that today is Penguin Awareness Day and they think it's just a regular Monday. The reason for this, of course is that they refused to adopt the new Gregorian calendar in 1582, and still adhere to the old Julian one, for tax purposes.
