A group of 75 MPs are calling for the release of 15 penguins “trapped” in a small enclosure “without sunlight or fresh air” at the Sea Life London Aquarium.

Housing the 15 gentoo penguins at the attraction on the South Bank was “un-British”, said the leader of the campaign.

This suggests that it has been a strong breeding year for dormice in Dorset. Our warm summer may have encouraged second broods or early breeding from this year's young.

What a late-season dormouse boom at Powerstock Common nature reserve! 🙌Over the last two months our ecology team found almost 50 dormice in our monitoring boxes across the site, including a couple of late-season breeding females.

Back in 1997, there were just 11 booming male Bitterns left in the UK – almost extinct. Thanks to conservation by @rspb.bsky.social and @naturalengland.bsky.social 283 booming males were recorded in 2024.

Les Cater shares his story and stunning photos of these rare birds ⤵️

Buried in Studland churchyard
Today in 1869 William Lawrence died.
He has one of the most remarkable service records I have ever come across.

Atlantic white-sided dolphins are sleek, energetic, and instantly recognisable by their yellow-tan flank stripe, dark back, and tall curved dorsal fin.

Known for their acrobatics, they often leap, tail-slap, and ride the bow waves of whales!

Nice garden ticks Marcus @mjlbirder.bsky.social
On Shetland for the weekend to do some jobs in & around the house but kept getting distracted by birds in the garden! Started with a Coues's Arctic Redpoll then Rory Tallack had brief views of a pipit which eventually gave itself up as a Pechora. Lastly, a Bullfinch was a most welcome addition.

I did see the one @mjlbirder.bsky.social caught a few years ago at St A, but it was in a pot in Poole, before he re-released it at St A

Swifts have declined 70% since 1994.

They fly from Africa to breed here, only to find we've blocked their nest sites.

A £35 swift brick nest box was proposed for all new buildings.

The construction industry lobbied Labour to block it.

Biodiversity sustains life. Labour sustains economic power.

Their dedication led to 51,514 individual animals being recorded, representing 46 different cetacean species!
